I've had an oculus rift since it launched in 2016 and it's probably the best piece of tech I've bought in a very, very long time. The most fun I've had gaming as well since I was a kid. Super fun, never get bored of it. Although I am taking a break to focus on business stuff, which just has to be a priority right now.

VR is addictive!  One of my favourite games is called Onward (indie game) and another Esport game called Echo Arena (it's like Ender's Game).

The games weren't great in the first few months when the Rift was released, but the quality of the content has gotten so much better recently.

Everyone who comes over to check out the Rift is blown away by it. :)

Video recording is zoomed in and recorded on the left eye, so it doesn't fully represent what I see.

(same map but in the night)

I have a bunch of other VR videos that I've recorded here

If you want to add me on Oculus Home or Steam, the name is: Whoa182  (also search matthew lake on home).

I briefly tried the Gear product from Samsung and Cardboard from Google. I can see the potential. The systems made me a little queasy/dizzy though, after a few minutes of use.

Yeah I don't really count them as being 'True VR'. They're actually terrible compared to the high end headsets.  My brother has a Gear VR and I got bored of it pretty quickly (so did he)... it also lacks positional tracking, no hand controllers, and has a lower fresh rate (needs to be 90 Hz).

Lack of positional tracking can easily cause bad motion sickness. Also with intense games using normal locomotion, the majority of people's brains adapt within a few days to a couple weeks. If there is no artificial movement, almost everyone will be totally fine (if it has 6DoF). Moving in the game when you're not moving in real life can make people feel weird... you just have to train yourself for a few days before it feels normal.

My brother rarely ever uses his Gear VR, but he always comes here wanting to play on the Oculus Rift. :)  The mobile and PC headsets are worlds apart!

If you can, try to find a demo of the Rift somewhere.

In the VR community when some of us talk about mobile VR we use the term "poison the well". I think mobile VR did that, because it doesn't really show off what VR actually is. I mean it's okay to watch movies, but you don't get that 'sense or presence' and feeling you get with high end VR.

Sometimes I wish mobile VR didn't exist right now because it gives people a false impression of what VR is like. Although, I guess at some point, these devices will have 6DoF as well - possibly as early as 2018.

Thanks for all the info on the Rift. I had read reviews and seen specs so I know it was top of the line. I would get one, but I just don't have enough money right now.

A new game was just released the other day called "Beat Saber"

It's topping the charts on steam last time I checked.

Light Sabers + Music. What's not to love. :)

Here's a video I recorded earlier of me playing

Here's a video of what it looks like with mixed reality

Beat Light Saber has some potential. I would want it to be more dancy or choreographed though. I suppose the other thing I'd be looking for is productivity functionality. I want a large virtual monitor for a computer workspace and the ability to remote my PC or Mac. Is that available yet?

I did buy another brand of this thing, it was a cheap smartphone holder, but it didn't work so well as a productivity device (it wasn't easy to code on) and I never went back to it. Still hoping for such a device.

I had a fake cheap device + cell phone LG G3 and watched a few movies before battery on LG inflated and is now gone - it was quite nice.

I know it's not the same thing, but I'd buy cinematic projector now rather than this. And some good sound system. Unless money was not a constrain - then of course I'd get one of high end devices.

Oh man, the cheap headsets are so bad lol. AVOID THEM. lol

Oculus Go is decent, but it still doesn't provide 6DoF.

Rift 2 looks like it's going to be amazing though. I think VR will really take off by 2nd or 3rd gen.

The projector might be a bit more comfortable than wearing a headset, but it's completely different.   And in VR, I have any size screen I want.. even one size of IMAX... and I can enjoy movies in a virtual cinema with friends. :)

That was a public VR cinema, so people can be annoying, including those little red things.  BIG SCREEN is more private and better.

In VR you can have as many virtual screens as you want... Sometimes I work in VR while I'm on the phone.

And speaking of dancing.. check this out!

Work in VR? Got any videos of that? Definitely need access to a Windows or real OS computer to get anything but social/customer oriented work done, and need to be able to type on an actual keyboard. Swappable batteries and a charging station are a must too. I imagine these things won't last an 8 hour work day.

No, I couldn't record that work because of data protection, privacy, bank account numbers etc.. I raise funds for heart disease charity, so I'm mostly just talking, and I can type without looking at the keyword.

I just like it because it puts me in a completely different environment.

That being said, the headsets really need a small form and become a little lighter to be really practical for long work days.

Do you think they are too heavy? How much do they weigh? What about anchoring it to a chest trap?

If you're walking around and actively playing a game, then I don't really start to get uncomfortable until about 6-8 hours. But if just sitting, you notice it quicker..

They've already done few things to distribute weight, like how the triangle at the back catch underneath at the back of the head. It has a few adjustments on there which help for tighten and tilt, too.

The old HTC Vive is much more uncomfortable by comparison though.

Apparently "Oculus Go" is pretty good, but not as comfortable Rift.  Thinking about picking up Oculus Go, soon. :)

I'm surprised VR isn't more popular on this forum!  :|?

I think it's b/c it's a gaming thing and while most of us gamed at some point, we are focusing on more career related things?

I think the physical activity portion of it is attractive though. Gamification of working out can be very beneficial.

Yeah maybe you're right.

If any anyone comes across this and does have VR, come into ENDGAME. It's a show every week where they talk about the future.

You don't need VR, but most people in this group have it.
