I know I suffer with both depression and OCD, also ADHD. But I’m wondering exactly what the underlying cause of this feeling (or not enough feeling) is. I’m assuming it’s depression.

It’s like feeling like I’m underwater most of the time, and I get urges to “snap myself out of it” so to speak. Things like wanting to submerge myself in freezing cold water, slap myself round the face or just an overwhelming urge to scream and tense up all my muscles at once. Like I’m trying to wake myself up from something. It sometimes makes me feel like I’m not real and just numb, struggle to get excited or enthusiastic.

The only thing that temporarily helps, and I mean temporarily is cold showers and intense exercise. But it only takes an hour and i slip back into the numb dream type state that I can’t snap out of. It’s worse some days than others, when it’s particularly bad it makes me quite strongly crave cocaine (which I used to be addicted to but haven’t used in 4 years and obviously do not want to go back to.)

I recently had some progress with acetyl l carnitine, but that wore off in a week. I tried Alpha GPC thinking it might be a lack of acetylcholine, but felt worse, and all dopamine/serotonin boosting supplements either make me feel more numb or really low, anxious and sad. The only thing that has ever given me temporary relief from depression is Licorice Root, I have no idea why.

Can anyone relate to this urge to snap out of it dreamy type feeling and is there anyone that has worked out a way to overcome it?

Hmm.

A dreamy type feeling. As if you're not real, or the world isn't real. A lack of emotional response to various things.

Sounds like Depersonalisation/Derealisation to me!

Although you seem to only have the milder form, and not the terrible, chronic one where all thoughts begin to evaporate and everything is completely detached from you. I do wonder... do you have any symptoms of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo as well? Your response to noradrenaline (cold showers and urges to snap out of it with extreme activity) makes me suspect so. But, overall, it seems like you've gotten DP/DR.

The following drugs have effects on this state:

Kappa antagonists (Cerc-501, Naloxone+Buprenorphine - the fact that you have addictive tendencies might make this the best class of drugs - they are also anti-addiction drugs)

SSRI's

Lamotrigine

And since you also have ADHD, then this drug might also benefit you - Modafinil.

Is there any type of supplement route I can follow? I only ask because it is incredibly difficult to get hold of medications where I’m from. Unless I pay thousands for a psychiatrist and even then they tend to be quite moody when it comes to diagnosing yourself and requesting certain meds. I’m on fluoxetine and have been for years. I go to hell anytime I attempt to come off it. It keeps me level, but it’s not enough if that makes sense. I do agree with it being part depersonalisation after reading your link. Although like you said, not the full version.

No supplements will work on this.

We've got entire threads about how it doesn't work - there are options though... CERC-501 is an experimental drug at this state, and can be obtained through a group-buy - I've actually been a part of one such buy - others on the forums have mentioned how they are interested as well.

If you contact the user Brighterpath, whom organized the last group buy, then you might be able to rustle up enough people to get another custom synthesis done. It's going to cost a bit though... around 240 brittish pounds, most likely - and that's if you get at least 10 people interested in joining the group buy.

Lamotrigine may however be available from various online sources - buuut... the authorities in many countries, especially here in the EU (which you will be a part of for a while more) have been cracking down on buying drugs, even legal ones, without prescription, by seizing various packages they know to be suspicious. Not sure which sites are considered trustworthy or able to deliver to the UK.

With that said, private Dr.'s are often more perceptive towards prescription-requests - just be honest and tell them you have a strange kind of depression and you believe it's DP/DR, and that your SSRI isn't really helping.

EDIT:

Well, I believe United Pharmacies used to be able to deliver, and they seems to be partially based in the UK...

Wow, complicated stuff then!! It’s a shame that there isn’t a supplement protocol for it. I thought maybe it was a noradrenaline issue which was why I’ve been using certain methods to make me feel truly “alive and fresh”.

Is there any reason that I responded well depression wise to Licorice Root of all things? I didn’t take it for too long as I read about it lowering testosterone and I really didn’t like the idea of that as i’m very keen on strength and exercise.

Sounds like you have high inflamatory cytokines and high interleukin 6.

licorice is increasing coritsole which supress immune system and deppressive cytokines.. you can get same efet from 800mg ibuprofen too.

it sounds like impulsivity or some OCD spectrum sht.  can happen from ssri withrawal/tolerance  can be a form of tardive dysphoria too.

 But :

fish oil, ibuprofen, a good omega ratio, a lot of fruits and vegetables, zero saturated fat...etc and lowering your body fat to below %20  and eating around maintance calories + weight training + running 3 times a week can lower your inflamatory cytokines and help with ssri withrawal and other psyciatric issues.

its very hard to recover from years of ssri usage but there is shtloads of drugs/suplements will help.

first down your dosage to half with creatine+ibuprofen.

cann add nac,zinc,magnesium..etc there is a lot of proven synergistic suplementss that poteintiate ssris.

You can use them as a bridge.

Try clomipramine if other antidepressants won't work. It is a golden standard for treating obsessive compulsive disorder.

It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
