LongeCity Newsletter
November 2011

A double-digit date (18th instead of the 8th) as we were waiting for more than a couple of double acts to line up. And here they are: TWO brilliant reseach projects on cryonics to select from, TWO new leaders have joined  LongeCity's core management cadre and TWO original features on caloric restriction. To make sure that you don't miss any of this, we have set up a system that notifies you TWICE about new developments.

Research Funding: Members referendum

LongeCity continues its proud tradition to support small-scale, high-impact life extension research. In response to our call for project proposals on cryopreservation and biostasis in August we received three high-quality proposal. With the help of knowledgeable peer reviewers a shortlist of 2 was drawn up by the Board and now our Members have the vote:

Project (1): "Uncovering the mechanisms of cryoprotectant toxicity" by Joao Pedro de Magalhaes and Soren Stirling -- employs large-scale gene expression profiling to identify genes and mechanisms of cryoprotectant toxicity in vascular endothelial cells.
Project (2): "Cryonics Research" by
Ben Best and Aschwin and Chana de Wolf -- proposes to study the effect of blood washout and  vitrification perfusion in a small animal model.
Members can vote until 18:18 GMT Dec.18th 2011 on one of the proposals. The proposal with the most votes will be supported with up to $8000, subject to a funding agreement and matching donations.

Lead Officers appointed: Mind & rwac

In response to our call last month, two very able appliacnts stepped foward and were appointed by the Board. We are delighted to welcome "Mind" – Justin Loew who re-joins LongeCity Management after a well-deserved rest from active duty. Mind is known to all as our previous executive Director (this role was abolished when he stepped down) who ran LongeCity almost single-handedly and chaperoned us through a difficult patch and as the host of the LongeCity broadcast.
He joins us in a vital role: as Membership Secretary, Mind will not only be the first point of contact for Members and outside enquiries alike, he will also help with bringing members with shared interests together.

We are also grateful to "rwac" – Kiran Prakash, a well known member of the community who steps up as Lead Engineer. In this role, rwac, who has a background in computer science and has served on the Engineers team for some time, will lead on the technical maintenance of the forum and on software development. Shannon, who was previously acting Membership Secretary is now acting as Lead Moderator, and will help with setting moderation policy and arbitrate entrenched disputes.

If you are looking to join LongeCity leadership the first step is usually to get some experience as volunteer.

Artice and Lecture on Calorie Restriction

This month we continue our drive to improve our site content especially regarding science articles with a double feature on caloric restriction. Often described as the only proven intervention that extends mean and maximal life-span in mammalian species, it is also a lifestyle choice for the committed immoralist. But why and how des it work? How to begin and what are the downsides? These and other questions are dressed in a short feature by Paul McGlothin, Co-author of “The CR Way” and in a Video lecture by Sven Bulterijs, LongeCity Director and student in biochemistry and biotechnology.
