Regenerative Medicine

Is the US Government needed in trying to take control and oversee a new form of medicine? On the other hand, is it better for big brother to offer incentives and tax breaks to research labs who are working in this field?

The demands for new and involuted methods of medicine will be needed as baby boomers reach their last days on planet Earth. Japan has the fastest aging population and has emanative plans to prepare for the growth of senior citizens. Sweden, Canada and the E.U. as well as Russia have a large population going into the twilight of life.

Baby boomers from all nations want all the benefits that modern medicine has to offer. But can medicine offer more? The next step in evolution of medicine is Regenerative Medicine. This new form of medicine offers the chance to re-grow tissue, or even organs for replacement or regenerate tissues and organs destroyed by disease or injury. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wrote a report in 2003: "2020: A New Vision-A Future for Regenerative Medicine". The report argues the benefits of regenerative medicine and the need to combine nearly every field in science. Regenerative Medicine is needed to offset the tide of healthcare costs. The cost of healthcare can be expected to rise from 13% GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to 25% GDP by the year 2040.

Other countries such as Japan, The European Union (EU), China and Australia have national initiatives to advance their regenerative medicine programs. The U.S. has been eclipse by 40% since the year 2000. The proposal for the Federal Initiative for Regenerative Medicine (FIRM) is in need to catch up in this field. Without this proposal, this field may take 40-50 years longer to come into existence.

Regenerative medicine is necessary for the development in the twenty first century healthcare. Medical advances from organ transplants and nerve and tissue regeneration can be possible with the right initiatives to research labs.

The report states that; "Regenerative medicine is the application of tissue science, tissue engineering, and related biological and engineering principles that restore the structure and function of tissues and organs. This new field encompasses many novel approaches to treatment of disease and restoration of biological function…This can be achieved by using therapies to autonomously regenerate damage tissues or using implants or even direct transplantation of regenerative tissues."

These therapies will cure a variety of diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer. Think of it! There would be no more organ failures or rejection of the tissues by the body's immune system because the tissues were from the patient and grown in a lab for replacement. In addition, the scaring of tissue from an operation would also be under control. The pain of feeling the scars rub against the lungs or when bending down can be eliminative.

How can this bankrupt nation afford quality healthcare? The cost of not doing medical research would be higher than the cost of the necessary healthcare caused by aging, as baby boomers get older. It is the old concept of preventive medicine. By investing a small percent of the GDP in medical research today, the U.S. would save millions of tax dollars in the future. Young people in the future would not have the heavy burden of taxation to cover the cost of the elderly. Regenerative medicine would be part of the "Longevity Dividend" for the future.

These may make good feature articles. Do you write for other places as well, like a newsletter or anything?

I left a comment here the other day and now its gone. Was that a glitch? I wonder if this will post... Anyways, I said something to the effect of that they are good blogs, and Ide like to see some more opinions on them. I think they would be good candidates for new popular culture and other types of stuff for the front page.

Thanks for the comments! I wrote these for a class in Longevity Dividend. I hope to write more soon.

The comments must be approved before they can be seen. I didn't know this. Sorry for not approving faster. Now I know how this system works, I will try to use it better.

I also blogged the Op-Ed's (that is what these papers are called) to my new blog.
Like the title? I don't have time to do more, but I hope to post more blogs here and there soon.

I also lost my wireless so I haven't been able to fold proteins. I don't know when I can fix it.

It has been a busy week!
