I suggest that donors be put on the list of subjects for clinical trials. Think that would motivate more donors?

FWIW, we can move this topic to any section that would get more members looking at it. Which would be best?

I can post in relevant threads pointing to this thread and the campaign.

Good idea. But I can also move it to on of the threads on eliminating senescent cells

Great idea, this would certainly motivate me. Send out lines of hope for those who are supportive and willing to put their money where their mouth is.

FWIW, we can move this topic to any section that would get more members looking at it. Which would be best?

Is it reasonable to experiment with moving this topic to all sections here, since it's relevant to Longecity's mission. Longecity's mission is "to conquer the blight of involuntary death," and to advance this mission, we aim to provide:
-- a repository of high-quality information;
-- an open public forum for the free exchange of information and views;
-- an infrastructure to support community projects and initiatives;
-- the facilities for supporting an international community of those with an interest in life extension...."

Just brainstorming.

Hi All,

Thanks for the input and all of the support thus far. We are definitely considering a campaign extension all things considered so I'll let you know if we move ahead with that.

As far as the points about messaging; it is definitely an effective tactic to pull on heartstrings and to also piggyback on "popular" diseases. It was a bit tricky to do that with the current project, however; so we are trying to do this sort of thing with our surrounding social media efforts.

Where did the $40,000 figure come from? What will it cover specifically?

There is breakdown on the campaign page; for the 40k goal: "Our first work project is to design candidate synthetic promoters which would be able to accurately detect senescent cells. To do that, we will analyse transcription profiles of a number of senescent cells. To cover all different senescence states, we will analyse senescent cells from different tissues and at different stage of senescence. We will use this data and proprietary bioinformatics algorithms to design genetic circuits which are specific to these cells."

To quote from the project web page. $40,000: Initial Goal – Candidate promoter design

Our first work project is to design candidate synthetic promoters which would be able to accurately detect senescent cells. To do that, we will analyse transcription profiles of a number of senescent cells. To cover all different senescence states, we will analyse senescent cells from different tissues and at different stage of senescence. We will use this data and proprietary bioinformatics algorithms to design genetic circuits which are specific to these cells.
-f---
I believe the first stage of the project is to pay for lab-equipment time to develop markers they can target.

So as I thought, it hasn't even budged since I posted it in other popular threads inciting a lot of discussion. I don't think people on this board should be our target demographic, as weird as that sounds. Most people aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is. If you can extend the campaign I'd rename it and make it emotional and about cancer. Change the graphic. Try to get SENS and Methuselah to post it on their FB pages. Definitely make it possible for people who donate to be trial candidates in anything discovered.

We cannot possibly offer clinical trial entry for something that could be a decade from testing in humans. It isnt our company either and clinical trials are a legal and ethical minefield. The closest they go is allowing donors to name lead promoters which IMO is pretty cool but yeah clinical trials and ethics make enrolling people for donations an absolute ethical nightmare.

The first products from the Cellage project will be biomarkers and QC for stem cells as their first step and these other researchers will get free access too. Regards diseases good idea because senescent cells are implicated in so many like heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic kidney disease and others. We will focus more on the disease angle and more about what synthetic biology could do for senolytics and other SENS damage like LysoSENS for example. From conversations I am having with LE community many do seem unclear on what synthetic biology is and how it could be used to treat aging-related diseases.

Why do you think people here are not a good target audience to include Nate, do you think as others here suggest that they would rather buy pills than fund long term research? Whats your rationale here?

Ugh, ethics, I don't see what the problem is ethically. I understand the legal bullshit involved, there's plenty of laws stifling any kind of movement in any direction, not to mention adding a ridiculous amount of expense to it all. Ethically though, people should be allowed to do whatever they want to their own bodies if they consent to it. That's about the extent of it. So long as they are aware of all the risks involved. Bioethicists are too religious about their "ethics" imo.

The reason I don't think people here are a good target audience is that 1: There's not that many people here. 2: Yes, the people here would rather throw away their money on things that probably won't work than on funding research that, as you say, because of government, will take a ridiculous number of years just to reach trials. You're better off rebranding and remarketing it as an anti-cancer or <insert disease here> effort with plenty of heart tugging, emotional words and pictures to boot. The money's out there. I think a lot of people here want to sit around talking without doing.

I am happy to report that this fundraiser has been endorsed under the LongeCity accreditation scheme.

We have looked at the proposal and are satisfied that this is a realistic project with bona fide life extension credentials. Through the connection to an scientific adviser who leads an LongeCity Affiliate Lab we see good prospects of ensuring responsible stewardship and data sharing for public and community benefit.

In an internal Members-only discussion, we are now considering what extra steps LongeCity might be able to take to support this initiative.

I cannot LIKE this post enough. It is really so great so see the community starting to really come together and work on big projects together. I have noticed the last year in particular the pace of research is really starting to move fast and the support is growing too. I am seeing more and more longevity news in popular press, SENS income has soared and more and more projects (like MMTP) are being supported and funded by grassroots movements. It would be fantastic to join forces with every group serious about getting the critical science done so we can all benefit in the long term. Bravo!

This is the wrong area of the forum for that, if you can even appeal to the users here.  I don't know who checks this area. The PM's are what got me here but some people might have disregarded them as spam. This should be posted in threads on inflammaging or NR. We should be hitching a ride on the coattails of an established grass roots movement too.

I second the move.  Makes a ton of sense !  Way to go Nate   :cool:

There is huge interest in life extension research but to most it seems a pipedream.

This is why fighting disease will appear a more practical and vital cause to support.

People want to save others from death by illness, but accept death by old age.

And those wanting to extend their own life are often waking up late and impatient.

In My Humble Opinion

Best to focus on the curing diseases, health and independence aspects of longevity research then. One thing is sure, 15+ years of "selling" immortality and longevity has failed and yet we see success when we pitch from the 3 points mentioned. So best way is to make the research relevant to those things with longer life a possible "side effect". Aubrey does this and SENS is enjoying increasing growth year on year. Look at how much they raised in the winter raiser taking a combined total of over 456,000 and that isnt even including the 60k of new patreons over the course of 2017 or OncoSENS which took 72k. This has been a record breaking year for SENS and the message from them is always curing diseases and health over anything else. I think that is a valuable testament.

We saw similar results as MMTP when we focused on the disease and health aspects of our research, people are generally short term thinkers and so they can get behind things like this easier and support it and value health over longevity.

One look at the these studies confirms this:

1: Partridge, B., Lucke, J., Bartlett, H., & Hall, W. (2011). Public attitudes towards human life extension by intervening in ageing. Journal of Aging Studies, 25(2), 73-83.

2: Lugo, L., Cooperman, A., & Funk, C. (2013). Living to 120 and Beyond: Americans’ Views on Aging, Medical Advances, and Radical Life Extension. Pew Research Center, August, 6. URL: http://www.pewforum....life-extension/

Common guys.  Longecity is matching donations up to $3000 for the subgoal.  Do it now.  Targettng senescent cells is the most promising approach in a long time.  Just a few bucks helps.

please donate here at LongeCity.
