we knew for a while that depression is associated with inflammation. this is one elegant theory describing why:

https://www.scientif...ess-depression/

fight-or-flight response places extreme demands on the mitochondria. All of a sudden, they need to produce much more energy to fuel a faster heartbeat, expanding lungs and tensing muscles, which leaves them vulnerable to damage. Unlike DNA in the cell’s nucleus, though, mitochondria have limited repair mechanisms. And recent animal studies have shown chronic stress not only leads to mitochondrial damage in brain regions such as the hippocampus, hypothalamus and cortex, it also results in mitochondria releasing their DNA into the cell cytoplasm, and eventually into the blood.

[...]

mitochondrial DNA, when released into the blood after an injury, mobilized a pro-inflammatory immune response. Because of mitochondria’s bacterial origin and its circular DNA structure, immune cells think it’s a foreign invader.  When circulating mitochondrial DNA binds to a particular receptor, TLR9, on immune cells, they respond as if they were reacting to a foreign invader such as a flu virus or an infected wound. The immune cells release chemicals called cytokines telling other white blood cells they need to report for duty at sites of infection, inflammation or trauma.

I'm glad at least one person found it useful. Now, while stress prevention is ideal, it would be also nice to know how to stabilize those mitochondria and prevent them from leaking mDNA. Anyone knowledgeable on that?

Edit: here is one common sense idea: https://mitochondria...l-dysfunction/

it covers both nurtition and excercise.

update: i have been taking baby aspirin for a week, and my emotions are smoother and more even. I didn't notice anything initially. However, at the same time i stopped high dose fish oil supplement that was f...ing me up, so that is an another issue.

I had to increase my allopurinol, because small dose aspiring raises uric acid and I started having some aches. BTW, allopurinol has effects of bipolar, too.

What effect did the fish oil have on you and why? What dose were you using and DHA/EPA ratio? Thanks

i was taking near 2 g of DHA and EPA each a day (3 huge capsules a day) after reading a convincing depression researcher that hinted everyone should be taking 2 g of EPA to reverse bad ratio of omega 3/omega 6 in western diet. after a week, i was wired, irritable and anxious. I found some online posts with people posting similar symptoms (and insomnia, I didn't have that). I stopped and symptoms went ago. Then I restarted 1 capsule a day with about 650 mg DHA and EPA each, and still gave me similar symptoms after a week, but not as bad.

I dunno, maybe purified EPA is the way to go?

I guess it could be choline in fish oil too.

since that i read that fish oil increases oxidized LDL and should be avoided altogether. on the other hand, fish oil is known to protect from IQ loss in children exposed to mercury (everyone now). Very confusing subject.

I take pretty high doses and recently switched to a higher DHA ratio then what is in most supplements. Been using Nows 2:1 DHA/EPA about 6g DHA/3g EPA per day. I read that DHA was much more important which is why I switched but I’ll have to research some more.

Also:

https://www.ncbi.nlm...pubmed/2141757/

And looks like EPA is better:

https://www.ncbi.nlm...les/PMC3262608/

“In addition, because potent lipid mediator metabolites of EPA and DHA are of great interest currently, their influence on these important outcomes should be assessed because current evidence suggests that their antiinflammatory and tissue-protective effects are nearly 1000 times greater than those of EPA and DHA (7).”
