It seems the the cheapest source of spermidine is wheatgerm, however to get a reasonable dose it might mean eating up to 1/2 a kg of it.

Since spermidine is water soluble, I thought I could use water to extract it.

Does anyone know how efficient this would be or have any advice on best practice?

Are you sure? Wheatgerm is about $15 for half a kilo, and that half kilo would contain about 120 mg spermidine. Compare that to 99% spermidine from Amazon. They sell 5 grams for $113, so 120 mg would cost $2.71.

Of course, if you live in UK, it might not be available through Amazon. However, the actually seller is RPI, which ships internationally if you can give them a commercial address.

Wheatgerm is a lot cheaper where in my local shop. You still have a point, it is probably not worth the hassle even if it is slightly cheaper. This company is not far from me in the UK https://www.alfa.com...catalog/A19096/ . Don't know if they will sell to me.

Unlikely unless you have a connection to a corporation or university and can have it sent there. Some of them require you set up an account with all sorts of info to convince them you aren't a member of the despised hoi polloi.

I was just comparing US prices at Amazon. Of course prices vary widely around the world. The US price for spermidine is far higher than it is in China, for instance, where you can find a kilo for less than a dollar a gram. And likely all retail sources in the US come from China, with enormous markups.

Well, for all of us who would be heavily prosecuted by our dutyfull custom-officers for importing 'drugs', what would actually be an easy extraction protocol for spermidine from wheatgerm?

Here's a simple method in a patent application -- http://appft.uspto.g...=DN/20140378708

Here's a simple method in a patent application -- http://appft.uspto.g...=DN/20140378708

[0035] The "step of treating the plant and/or the processed plant product with water" denotes a step of immersing the plant and/or the processed plant product in water to extract a polyamine-containing composition from the plant and/or the processed plant product. The "water" denotes a water that is not mixed with any acid solution or any alkali solution. In this step, the water may be left at rest or stirred. The time for the treatment varies depending on the extraction amount, but it is preferably 10 minutes or more, more preferably 30 minutes or more, still more preferably 1 hour or more. In some cases where the time is less than 10 minutes, a sufficiently large amount of the polyamine composition is not extracted in this treatment step. The upper limit of the time is not limited. However, the time is normally 24 hours or less, preferably 12 hours or less, particularly preferably 6 hours or less. Even when the treatment is performed for 24 hours or more, the extraction amount of the polyamine composition nears saturation and the amount newly extracted thereafter is probably limited.

So basially let the wheat germ sit in water for 24 hours, sieve and drink?

It will probably contain most of the polyamines, along with starches and sugars and so forth, while leaving most of the fats, fiber and proteins behind.

It says to soak in 20-90% alcohol first to extract gluten and other non polyamides. Also sounds like the water soak should be slightly acidic.

The problem is if the alcohol treatment is done first, is the amount of work required to recover the alcohol and separate the wheatgerm from the alcohol for the next step.

If alcohol treatment is not done first then gluten will be extracted with the polyamines, making the solution viscous, making it possibly difficult to sieve.

you can use kombucha bacteria and kefir bacteria and bread yeast at the end to ferment it and get rid of the gluten than make bread out of it cost is almost 0 the taste is kind of bad but you get lots of lactic acid in there witch is good for mitocondria and other acids for almost free
