I think one of the best ways to draw attention to the cause would be to get Aubrey on some of the american tv shows. The daily show, The colbert report, would be funny and could get alot of people talking (and donating). Maybe even oprah? Just a thought.

That's because you put "Aubrey de Grey" in the headline...

I agree. He needs more mainstream exposure. 60 Minutes was a good start...

Yeah, he has been on some TV, but he definitely needs to be on more. Anyone with any type of media connections, listen up.

Actually, if you're going to go humorous, I'd rather see him on the Leno or Letterman. Less chance for ridicule with an equal chance for a few minutes of seriousness. The Daily Show ends up hyping vaginal cream instead of life extension. :)

lol your probably right, I don't think he would be able to get any of his points across in a conversation with stephen colbert.

Yes he does, and I think a "reality" show with aging as the centerpeice is even better. [thumb]

give me a couple of days, I can think of some crazy shit that just might fly; the question then becomes how well I can sell it to a producer. [mellow]

Or you could have a UFC type reality show where young fighters fight old people, say Tito Ortiz vs Larry King, but Larry gets a taser. I think that would drive home the fact that aging is bad.

All publicity is good publicity. Colbert show is ledgendary and has a HUGE impact. I guarantee Colbert will be against the concept, but that is because he is Parodying the conservatives. The viewers of that show are precisely the sort of people who are likely to find the concepts interesting. I think its a great idea. I will see if I can write an email to them and suggest they look at the work De grey is doing.

MF has a book in production w/ a major publisher. When it's released late this year we expect Aubrey to do a book/pr tour to accomplish what you are all trying to promote in this thread. Great idea, and we're "on" it.

Cheers!

So there is no ned for us to email Colbert Report to bring their attention to Aubrey? You will do that yourself?
PS: If they do want Aubrey or anyone else for that matter, the person going on the show better sit down and watch at least 30 episodes of their show in order to understand what to expect!

Particularly watch the interview with Dawkins... thats a good example.

Does anyone know what the name of the book is going to be?

I can think of some catchy titles.

Methusalah Mouse,

What kind of television pull does coming out with a book like that bring in? Do you have an idea, had any contacts, contacted any people, does the book publisher give you suggestions or anything, the bigger the publisher the better.... Im excited about this potential and wondering just what kind of info you have on how potent it may be or become. ....

It's not just parodying the conservatives. Comedy at the heart is cynicism. Any serious and optimistic idea will be a target. Leno and Letterman might be good...but better would be shows like Good Morning America, Primetime, some CNN / MSNBC show or other news analysis shows.

derisive comedy meant to discredit and beclown (thanks instapundit) the subject is unredeemingly destructive - we will not knowingly take part in such.

Brokenportal, We really can't say more about the book until the publisher makes their announcement. But we're interested in the same things you are :-)

I would have designed the cover too, if my 3D software hadn't uninstalled itself just before I'd rendered the hair for my `future' people.
The consensus was that future people wouldn't be bald.
Maybe I'll have better luck in the second edition...

I agree, comedy is aversion therapy for the mentally infirm.
I think SENS work is best inserted into the public mind via a continuous peripheral presence.
Its better not to trumpet such glittering possibilities, rather - tantalise, and use the advertising trick of making the public `want' to find out more for themselves.
Self confident, understated presence is the best thing for serious products (from my brief and harrowing experience of advertising)

Not! I must add! That this is any of my business.
It seem that Aubrey is doing a fine job of promoting his schemes as it is. Considering the man doesn't own a television -

Aubrey mostly talks with scientists, it is too bad he does not have the money for high end PR.

only private donations slated for PR, M prize money goes toward the prize--100% of money donated stimulates research in his manner, nothing goes to the organization's overhead...

I see. I thought that was the case but wasnt sure. Is there a way that the mprize can request donations with a side note to donate to its supporting ideas, such as sens PR, while maintaining its integrity?

Thats where sponsorship comes in. I was watching a few snippets of the TED seminars, which seem to be sponsored by BMW.
This is the fun part, marrying sympathetic corporates to strands of Extropian science. Gaining their patronage in the same way sport or music events do.
Though of course we should make sure the corporations we choose are also reputable, and not likely to detract from the science.
Microsoft part sponsored a large seminar on how SME's could also profit from the current climate in Iraq. Hardly good PR I would have thought. And I just cant believe that Bill Gates is not of the type , - hell bent on living forever....
If someone here does manage to snag Microsoft, as a sponsor of events, I would imagine things would pretty much snowball from there.

I left a comment on this TED interview with Richard Branson which was only added yesterday, saying that someone should hook Richard up with Aubrey...

Considering that Branson is the 'rebel billionaire', I don't think it would be surprising to anyone if he gained a vested interest in life-extension. Come to think of it, I think Branson might be the best candidate for the rich poster-child.
