Welcome to the nootropics forum! I hope you enjoy yourself, connect with other enthusiasts, and learn a lot about this exciting new field. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns about the nootropics subforum! Posted Image

If you're new here, please take a moment to read these few guidelines, and help us maintain the quality of discussion in this forum:

1. The substances and practices we discuss here are highly experimental. We are a community of self-experimenters who share experiences and discuss the neurochemistry of cognition. In many conversations, members will suggest a course of action...but under no circumstances should anything here be construed as authoritative medical advice. Though there is a wealth of helpful information and advice here, it is ultimately your responsibility to research the risks and benefits, and decide what you're comfortable with.

2. All substances affect each individual differently, especially those which work upon the mind. Cognitive enhancement is a fledgeling field, and availability of good studies is the exception, rather than the rule. There is no single answer to what nootropic to take for a given application, and the experiences of others should only be taken as a range of possibilities, which may or may not apply to you.

3. Search before posting. There is a six-year backlog of discussion here. If your question is of a basic nature, then it has almost certainly been discussed before. In light of the two points above (and because you probably won't get many responses if you don't!), please take the time to do a little research and familiarize yourself with the issues at hand.

4. Post in an appropriate thread. If a suitable topic already exists, please post there (even if it's old), rather than making a duplicate thread.

There was a link to a paper either in this thread or the other big one that had MB distribution in different organs.

MODS: can we get a new MB section, like resveratrol and move the existing MB posts into it? That way we can also create some sticky posts with dosage, etc?

Hmm, interesting idea, but I doubt it would fly. The higher-ups are fairly cautious about creating new subforums. Despite its promise, I don't think there's enough threads (or research) yet to warrant a dedicated forum.

But the several mega threads do make it difficult to find answers without investing a lot of time (and frankly there's a lot of unnecessary info to wade through, like the way this thread keeps coming back to MAOIs). It would be nice to provide easier access, somehow. Perhaps a thread or longer entry in a thread index with links to the best posts/discussions on research and aspects of usage?

Hmm.. If that is the case, how about a subsection called 'Research Area - Enter at your own risk' (or similar) and then 'MB', etc under that?

Much faster to browse and easier to organise information.

Maybe we can make and maintain an index thread with links to all the important posts that are all over the place as a compromise? We all (or to use the word community for a change) are able to contribute to this thread to make it work. In case this succeeds, this thread can be made sticky. The down voting button can be used to signalize dubious content in this thread, after which this content can be removed by a mod.

In the absence of a new section, that would certainly be the next best thing. However, surely the mods would be open to tidying things up a bit? It'd save a lot of repeat questions. I think the length of these MB threads shows that a new section would benefit everyone.

@brainbox: that's precisely what I did with the pinned thread index in the nootropics forum. I left a call for contributions up for months, and with thousands of views I got suggestions for exactly 3 threads (and at a time when posting activity was much higher). The other dozens had to come from me doing searches and reading backwards through the entire topic list (have read about 2/3 of the topics in this subforum, though many are still in my notes and not in the index yet). In other words, I'd be surprised if the community would be that apt to undertake such an organizational project.

However, the index was very successful in cutting down on the incessant "do I need choline with my piracetam?" threads (there used to be at least one a day, it seemed), and other repeat questions. The same principle would probably help here, for those who don't want to read 500-post threads.

But the main problem will still be the linearity and multiple topics. I think what needs to be done first is to split the longer threads into smaller discussions; for instance, threads covering MAOI, dosage and research might make everything easier. Then perhaps links in the first post to the best points in the thread, or posts where some kind of breakthrough was made in the discussion. I'll have to read through the other long threads this weekend to get a better idea of the topic distribution.

As I said before, there really isn't enough MB research going on to warrant an entire section. If anything, it would probably encourage even more questions from people looking for easy answers without doing any research, which is too far in the opposite direction. I too think an organized index, and better thread cohesion, is the best solution to try first.

I agree about the amount of research, but it seems to be a very interesting compound regarding dose dependent effects. Apart from possible direct usefulness I think it is interesting also in a kind of historical perpective. It's one of the first medications discovered, ditched at one moment in time, reappearing decades later with added insight regarding dose dependent multiple benefits. Kind of highlighting the limiting tunnel vision we all have and that looking out of the box can always be good.

I didn't notice the noot index, probably because i do not frequent that part of the forum that much, but yes, that's kind of what i was thinking of. It also illustrates that moderators can only help out a bit to keep the forum clean, but if initiatives do not touch down properly and are not endorsed by the community, they will fail irrespective of the good intentions or cleverness.

Cleaning up threads does cost a lot of time and especially in active threads could be prone to conflictious situations since one persons garbage can be another persons lifework achievement.

I agree completely with your opinion about how interesting it is. All I was saying was that there are only 29 threads about this substance here (compared to hundreds for some others), and there is only a handful of things to say about it given the amount of current research available. But my research on it has not been thorough, so if it really is likely to warrant as much discussion as resveratrol, someone do correct me.

It also illustrates that moderators can only help out a bit to keep the forum clean, but if initiatives do not touch down properly and are not endorsed by the community, they will fail irrespective of the good intentions or cleverness.

I'm really not sure what you mean by this, since the thread index here in no way illustrates a failure of its stated goals. In fact, I'd call it a huge success in helping to clean up the endless repetition in this forum. This is because I did more than "help out a bit," by spending dozens (if not hundreds) of hours scouring the threads in this forum, so other people could find the information more easily.

I agree that the "community initiative" failed, but all this illustrates is that no one besides me is willing to perform what is an onerous and research-intensive task which was 100% my own idea. And while it does only represent my opinion of what is valuable (aside from the 3 mega-popular threads that were suggested), there have been 0 criticisms in the past year despite the 32,000 views.

Cleaning up threads does cost a lot of time and especially in active threads could be prone to conflictious situations since one persons garbage can be another persons lifework achievement.

I was only talking about splitting mega-threads into more well-defined topics. This does not imply deletion of anything.

And in general, the only thing I delete in these kinds of threads are one-sentence questions that were already answered earlier in the thread (e.g. "where can I buy this stuff" or "doesn't it turn your pee blue").

Ok, I was interpreting the contribution / view ratio as somewhat negative as a community effort, but you're right, it's a huge benefit looking at it that way.

During the evenings next week I would be able to do something like this to help out or continue your effort. I will start an MB index thread, skim the MB threads, clean the repetitive subjects and create links to interesting stuff in the index. If you or someone else would like to join we should think of a mechanism to distribute threads over participants.

Good idea? If yes, who would like to join and help?

[Yesterday I split off a MAOI thread. Today I'll work on one for dosing, maybe nootropic and non-nootropic research, and some of the more specific categories Mr Happy mentioned (if there's enough for full threads)]

I really appreciate this, it will make it a lot easier to give someone a link for MB info.

I just finished re-rendering the big MB threads; I'm bumping them all so everyone will know where they are.

Methylene Blue Experiences
Methylene Blue Dosing and Products
Methylene Blue Research
Methylene Blue and MAO Inhibition

These topics are interrelated, but we should try our best to keep discussions as topically segregated as realistically possible, to make the information easier to find in the future.

[also moved all the discussion about splitting those threads into this index]
