Hi everyone. I have some ideas on how we can redesign the longcity website for the better. I'm now in the process of making some rough concept ideas for the design of the site. Keep in mind these are just rough concepts and haven't spent much time designing them so they will look very nonprofessional in fact childish really. When I get the time I'll clean them up in photoshop then use fireworks to design it then export it to dreamweaver. Most images I use will probably have a copyright on them so we would need to choose different images for the final product.

Here is my concept for the intro page. I really like the huge monument that I put in the middle of the cities park. I want to spend more time and turn it into a huge fountain or something.

The concept looks good. Youll want to get feedback from others working on this about how it might or might not fit into the whole. Can something like this be made so you can pan in, with in a fixed box, to the different buildings, etc... or is there another way it could be arranged to create that effect?

Thanks :) I wasn't aware others were already working on this, can you link me to previous discussions on this?

I"m sure a panning affect where you can go across the whole entire city by clicking on a map and the ability to zoom in can be achieved in Adobe flash. I say we just go the lazy route and agree on all the basic concepts, rough drawings, etc, and then just hire a professional web developer to bring our ideas to life.

Is this the best use of our resources? I think it might be worth thinking about how people use the forum, and what we actually want to accomplish with a redesign. Do we want to grow the organization? Bring in new people? If so, we should think about why people come here. The most common reason is that they are looking for information about something. We should make it easier for people to see what kinds of information are here, and easier to find what they want. Instead of redesigning our interface, our time might be better spent writing a few good FAQs, for example. We should make it easier for people to become part of our community; making the existing interface clearer might be a reasonable start. There is nothing wrong with a forum that looks like a forum. People know how to use forums. There's a huge store of experience with straightforward forum software among the people of the internet world. Rather than discarding that, we should leverage it. Make Longecity the best forum anyone has ever seen, and one that people find easy to use. Don't turn it into a place where new users say "WTF?", and then navigate away to something that makes sense to them.
