I have to make this quick but here is the spill. I have been reading into Quantum Mechanics and general Newtonian physics to try and come up with a way to generate electricity as efficiently as possible. Through my readings I had a funny thought pop into my head, which I've pondered on for about a week now.

Pulleys allow large objects to be lifted with little force. The unbalance of force causes movement (obviously). So essentially the energy it takes to lift and drop this heavy object would only be 1/2 of the energy it would generate. I made a quick diagram in MS Paint (below)

I will post on this more later, but for now I have to leave.

I know this has a flaw somewhere in it, because essentially it implies that we can create energy. This has been proven wrong on many occasions and that is why I have posted it here, to read your thoughts. Any input is much appreciated!

The flaw is that you only move the weight half as high. If you think about it in terms of potential energy you should see that you have not magically created energy from nothing.

I think I understand what you are saying, but could you elaborate further?

It has been a while since my phsyics days.

When pulling the pulley down you increase the potential energy in the weight, that is the energy transfer that occurs.

Potential energy of an object relative to earth is mgh. So by only increasing the height by half you only add half the energy.

Think about what happens when you change the gears on a bike, you change gear then it becomes easier to pedal but you end up going slower or having to pedal faster to keep the same pace.

Ahh I see. Thanks for the info! Like I stated, I knew this wouldn't work but that is why I had to ask.
