I realize many supplement companies still put on the bottle take with food even when it’s best absorbed on an empty stomach but I noticed that the NOW EGCg that I have not only says take with food but also says do not take this supplement on an empty stomach. That’s the first time I’ve even seen a supplement say that.

When it comes to EGCg I'd say "less is more".

 

Green tea extracts have a notorious reputation for toasting livers in those who are megadosing GTE trying to lose weight.

Likelihood score: A (well established cause of clinically apparent liver injury).  YIKES!   

 

I took a low dose green tea extract compounded with caffeine to help get me through my post lunch crump at work, & noticed this would kill my apatite for up to 6 hours.  It wasn't the caffeine, as I can drink coffee and still be ready for dinner an hour or two later.  

 

I realize EGCg is only one component of GTE, but apparently its the primary active component.

Seems like pretty high doses in the study. I usually take two pills on an empty stomach. Never noticed any increase in liver enzymes.

I think the main culprit is protein. Sugar, vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids can actually improve absorption.

One reason for taking supps with food is that on an empty stomach they can produce irritation. There are some that I can only take with food or suffer the consequences.

 

The risk of liver damage is real but IMO exaggerated. It has only been documented in a handful of cases for pretty high doses. Do not megadose EGCG.

I’m surprised how many supplements need to be taken on an empty stomach for proper absorption. EGCg, quercetin, lumbrokinnase, nattokinnase, Citrus Bergamot, Siberian and panax ginseng, MitoQ, astragalus, Arjuna, NAC, etc..
