.... I was looking for a command line flag and seeing lots of stuff about affinity mgt utilities like this but that seems to be fore CPUs.

The Affinity changer (developed by the Ukraine group) was the first and works well for folding with Windows (especially SMP). I experimented with most all the early versions, but haven't kept current with it.

The WinAFC affinity changer is more versatile and will probably do your job.

These and other affinity changers try (for SMP processing) to automatically determine optimum affinity.

In certain cases, the determination of optimum affinity may have to be done manually. Once one knows how affinity should be allocated, then the WinAFC affinity changer could be very helpful.

Download WinAFC here.

the issue for me is f@h pushes my cores to about 50C which kicks the fans in my laptop on high... its annoying to have to listen to them while im working or trying to study. so i want f@h only to run when my computer is idle.

I use speedfan to lower my CPU fan speed, just lowering it from 100 to 90% results in a clearly noticable difference. Of course you could lower it further, I don't know what temperatures that are to be considered "safe" though. Anyone?

I also use ATI Tray Tools. The GPU fan generally contributes the most to the noise from your computer, if it's reasonbly new and not cooled by non-traditional means. I'd recommend anyone with a (n ATI) graphics card less than ~3 years old to try this program. There should be, but I'm unaware of, similar programs for Nvidia cards.

What's up with the big up and down spikes recently?

Yes there were a couple of big spikes in PPD followed by downturns.

Not sure of the reasons, though likely related to holiday activity.

Looking at individual stats, some top folders produced a burst of PPD, then shut down for a couple of days. Some haven't cranked it back up, yet.

Our PPD are really low these days, but on the other hand more and more users are folding actively and/or joining our team.
I'm assuming our top folders will come back pretty soon and then our PPD should skyrocket. Now that chungehung cannot fold that much anymore, he wanted to give away his rigs and/or build new ones for cheap to support our cause. How does that sound? Any people interested to adopt a rig?

Troubleshooting folding can be like any approach to problem solving.

For example:

If employee's automobile is no longer taking employee to work, why not?

1. Is auto & employee (computer & FAH client) actually present?

2. Has auto (client) engine been started?

3. Is auto transmission (client engaged with work unit) in a forward gear?

4. Is auto (client percentage progressing) moving forward?

5. Is employee, or someone else, (client username and team name correct) actually driving car?

#1 If one has already been folding successfully then computer and client were present.

#2 Check this by observing client icon in system tray at bottom right of the Windows screen.

If not there, then check Windows Task Manager, open Task Manager pressing Alt-Ctl-Delete keys simultaneously.

Look under "Processes" tab for "FahCorexxx.exe".

If not present then the folding client is not started.

Find the folding folder: Search for Fahcore*.exe with Windows search function, and double-click it. That should start the client.

#3 & #4 The Graphical client has a progression indication on the main screen (click the Tray Icon). For both the Graphical client and the Console client, look in the folding folder for a FahLog.txt. There should be progression indications of percentage completion in 1% increments.

Looks something like this:

[22:44:30] Entering M.D.
[22:44:39] Run 0, Clone 151, Gen 34)
[22:44:39]
[22:44:39] Entering M.D.
[22:44:49] Completed 0 out of 250000 steps (0%)
[00:45:03] Completed 2500 out of 250000 steps (1%)
[03:22:27] Completed 5000 out of 250000 steps (2%)
[06:15:08] Completed 7500 out of 250000 steps (3%)
[08:49:31] Completed 10000 out of 250000 steps (4%)
[10:05:54] Completed 12500 out of 250000 steps (5%)

There are several possibilities if the client is not making progress.

One option is to stop the client, and restart it.

Stop the client with a command found in the Graphical interface "click the icon in the system tray". Look for a command that halts the client.

If you happen to be running the console client, click inside the DOS-like window and type "Control-C" to stop the client. Restart as in step #2.

#5 Make sure your username and team name are correct, or you may be folding for some other person or another team.

In the Graphical interface (click the system tray icon) look for the setup Graphic.

In the Console client it may be necessary to run the configuration flag. If you setup the console client this will probably be straightforward.

The above info is mainly for illustration, any particular folder's situation and symptoms may be different. It was mainly an exercise to try to encourage folders to become familiar with the process.

Every client and computer configuration are slightly different, if Folder can provide minimal information about the symptoms that can be observed, then your "mechanic " can help you troubleshoot your car (folding-machine).

Happy driving (folding).

As a person in a Nissan commercial once said:

"Life is short, enjoy the ride".

Enjoy the fold :)
