First time I read about using some herbal alternatives to Metformin.  Has anyone any advice to offer on this.  Here's the link that prompted this post:

I often eat a ketogenic diet, spend most of the day fasted, and exercise in this fasted state before breakfast.  I would imagine this activates AMPK at least as much as some small amount of an herb in a capsule.

Berberine would be another. It can interfere with pharmaceuticals however. More info at examine.  com

Glucosamine and Resveratrol also stimulate AMPK.

I believe I've read that forskolin induces AMPK activation as well.

Long-term forskolin stimulation induces AMPK activation and thereby enhances tight junction formation in human placental trophoblast BeWo cells

I believe Ginkgo Biloba is fairly good at activating AMPK.

I like sulforaphane. Though, consider only taking it once every 2-3 days until you get used to its blood sugar lowering effect. In fact, continuous staggered use may be preferrable to realize a therapeutic effect in my experience. But test different schedules.

Brad Stanfield has done a video comparing Metformin and Berberine.

I am one for Berberine notwithstanding his video.

I'm researching Icariin (the main active flavonol glycoside isolated from the herb Epimedium pubescens) for other purposes and I have encountered a study where it was compared to metformin (in rats). It seems relatively similar in action. while not being anti-androgenic.

Some refs:
