In this very interesting video, Prof Paul W. Ewald explains that in1970, no cancers had been associated with infectious pathogens, but we have now discovered that 20% of human cancers involve infections, and this number will likely rise substantially in future decades, as we continue to research the infection-cancer link.
Prof Paul Ewald's view that is infectious pathogens will likely turn out to be the major causal factors in autoimmune diseases, cancers and other chronic diseases (including serious mental health diseases), and Ewald provides a good evolutionary argument for why the causes of chronic diseases are likely to be due to infectious pathogens, rather than genes.
But this particular video focuses on infectious pathogens causing cancers.
Here are some of the interesting parts of the video:
29:00 — List of cancers that are currently known to involve infections.
33:50 — Paul Ewald say that we are now recognizing that infections are involved in many diseases, but ever more cryptically. So now we are considering infectious causes of chronic diseases, where the infections themselves may have been caught decades before the disease manifested.
