Low Stamina All My Life

I've had low stamina all my life. I remember as a child being unable to do lap swim, or run laps, anywhere near as well as peers and this continued through all my life.

One thing to note is that I had asthma as a child. It wasn't terrible but I did get heavily medicated eg prednisone, inhalers etc. Not sure if this is related.

I suspect this has something to do with my various other cognitive problems.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any hypothesis? Happy to post current lab work if needed.

I suppose it's possible you still have some mild asthmatic symptoms even tho you may not require medication. I think that was the case for me for quite a while. I had allergic asthma growing up but it wasn't so bad, I just had terrible endurance, the obese kid in my class had slightly better endurance than me. Another factor for me was not eating enough and poor appetite. I also think vitamin D3 supplementation helped some with breathing (only started with this a few years ago).

 

Eating more calories and vitamin D3 supplementation (2000-6000 IU per day) I suspect caused some real changes, including doubling of testicular volume around age 23 within ~6 months or so (I had normal testosterone levels etc before this).

 

 

Other than that, as far as random supplements that could have an effect on endurance or perceived endurance:

Meldonium

Resveratrol (beware this might cause low estrogen levels at high doses (grams, or maybe less than several grams), and associated side-effects like aches in joints or tendons)

 

I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 20s so I got a script for Ritalin (I can't really evaluate its effect on physical endurance or mental endurance long term, I've used it so often, it's good for ADHD type symptoms tho) but I take it with Meldonium these days because 1. Meldonium seems to counter-act some of the blood-flow limiting effects of the Ritalin. 2. some sort of motivational and general energy boost, including endurance boost, it makes me want to run for some reason if I take it sporadically (while I'm out walking to the store or whatever). So things are a lot better now. Megadosing d3 has helped a lot. Have to supplement high k2 which has side effects for me hence my constant struggle with this as you've seen from other posts of mine (by megadose I mean 5k iu but this rapidly causes hypercalcemia).

Diet growing up was...bad. High carb/low fat/ low protein. Long story but stupid parents.

Sadly even now I'm way behind on the endurance front, I think there are some lasting adaption from childhood I just didn't /couldnt get.

Diet now is fixed, good balance of fresh vegetables/lean proteins. I do consume a lot of whey if that means anything.

Battling nagging low mood/motivation. Trying maca for this presently which seems to be having some dopaminergic effects. Jury is still out. Other than this no other supps apart from D/K2

Also battling a few other cognitive issues. I generally feel a lot less mature/ready for the challenges of the world than people much younger than I am (I'm 30). I'm not stupid-near perfect SAT score and high GPA from Ivy- but I just feel so disconnected from life. Can't figure out what I want or how to get it. Don't have a strong personality presence even though I'm 6'2. Constantly feeling like "so-and-so has it all figured out, why don't I" and it's not about wealth, I've been lucky in my career and investments, it's more about "waking up" and taking control of life.

Man, it's weird for me. This forum has been hugely helpful but in a way hurtful too- various noots and supps have made me realize things just maybe could get normal for me but it's just beyond my grasp.

Have you thought of a life coach? Have you tried rigorous exercise? Not for a month or two, but forcing yourself for 1 year + ?

Even though I religiously lift weights, each day, every day I go is a struggle to get up and go. Every set I have to tell myself one more rep, just one more rep. Then just one more exercise... So on and so forth. Not everything is easy but you have to force yourself. Its that willpower that separates the wheat from the chaff.

Testing helps identify problems - which is probably money better spent than for hopes on a million different supplements.

 

Some simple things - test for sleep apnea. I think you can get an app on your phone to test for that.

 

Blood pressure/pulse rate.

 

Blood iron levels.

 

Maybe VOmax test. Such as, take a test before you start an exercise regimen - then a test afterward (after a few weeks or months). See if there is some improvement. Or you might find out that your VOmax is not really all that low for your age.

go see a functional medicine doctor and get a Genova ION profile done.  either go to the institute of functional medicine or genova's website and find a practitioner nearby.

Having weight lifted a lot in my 50's I made amazing strides..

 

L-Arginine and L-Citrulline supplements in weight lifting energy drinks. 

This is what Viagra really is. 

 

High doses of Systemic Enzymes.. to rebuild damage and reduce inflammation.

 

Protein Drinks and Digestive Enzymes... or Betaine HCL, or D-Limonene with food.. to break food down. 

 

Sleep and Massages.

 

Have your Testosterone levels checked. 

Have your Thyroid checked. 

B-12 levels.. could be low.. but take Vitamin E to activate it.

Eat meat for protein.
