I'm watching the channel 4 doco "Do you want to live forever?" and i think every newbie to the site needs to see this.

Alongside the movement currently being undertaken in the full member area where leadership are voting on the idea of hiring someone to make projects happen, I expect to see a lot of changes on the front page, and around the website in general. One of those changes I would like to see is a lot more 'collections' of resources prominently displayed on the main page, particularly collections of introductory material so that first timers can get straight into it.

I think the easiest point of entry for a newbie is watching a video. So, I propose that we introduce a prominent link (one of many more to follow) that links to an article: "Top 10 Immortalist videos"

The benefit of this is twofold: 1. Newbies can very quickly and easily get into what we are all about with a wide resource of information.
2. Top ten lists are commonly Dugg and voted for and stumbled upon etc.

The list should be maintained (new videos added to it and old ones removed as appropriate).

So for starters, I think this channel 4 doco:
http://video.google....065877451441972
should be number 1 on the list because it is produced by a reputable source, it focuses on the real science of our movement with a high profile figure, supported by many other high profile figures with some reasonable and common sense objections by other high profile figures. It is thorough, well produced, and overall I consider it to be largely positive.

Number 2 should be the ImmInst's own video ( http://video.google....ortality&time=0 ). It is overwhelmingly positive, very nicely produced with a wide range of professional opinion and covering a huge variety of topics.

Number 3 could be the film recently produced by Jason Silva ( ) which is a very nice personal exploration through immortality. It involves some interviews with high profile individuals and of course present a positive perspective.

After those three I am less certain about what could come next, but a few options are:
Ray Kurzweil's TED talk (which is not actually about ageing, but may help people realise that the future will happen faster than they expect)
(or maybe there is a better Kurzweil talk where he explains his desire to live longer?)

Aubrey's TED talk/s. The channel 4 documentary covered aubrey very well, so I think these talks should be further down the list, but they should be included because they do go into detail about how SENS might work.

Nick Bostrom.. He also has a TED talk. Does he have any other talks which could act as a nice intro into Immortality? Does he have any talks which focus on the Dragon Fable?

What other videos are there? Can we make ten?

I could probably come up with 10 good ones on Aubrey alone, but I wouldn't want to overload the Aubrey content, haha. Perhaps a Kurzweil talk or 2? Or a couple of the CR ones floating around? I guess we probably wouldn't want to have ones ones on general science or skepticism or things like that, but more focused on life extension? Or what about vids focused on cryonics? (I can think of at least a couple good ones of those) I have lots of ideas, but I don't want to post things that aren't what you have in mind, Aegist, so I will refrain for the moment.

Don't do that. Mixing ideas is the point of a forum. The only goal is that people can get an introduction to what we represent and what we want. A video on CR would be a good addition, a video on cryonics would be a good edition. Indeed we don't want to focus on just Aubrey, or any one aspect of the movement, so we want to find the best video we can which represents that one aspect.

So i think the Channel 4 is a good overview of SENS and the general desire for immortality. ImmInst's movie is a good overview of everything. Jason's film is a good personal perspective. A couple more personal explorations would be good, a cryonics, a CR, a futuristic, maybe an ethical focus, maybe a reply to the objections video... Ideally I would like to touch on all of the aspects of our movement amongst the 10 videos, but in the end, lets just try to find the best 10.

Building Gods I think would be applicable for this. It's got over 200 votes, and a 4.5 star rating.

[offtopic]

As for the Channel 4 Documentary. The documentary was amazingly well done, however I was disappointed by Dr. de Grey's critics, who seem to be more threatened by his ambitions than actually encouraged that someone has the drive to solve this problem in order to make the world a better place. If you believe dying is good, well then you can die, but I should choose to be able to live.

If Aubrey succeeds, gerontologists and some biologists will be looking for new jobs, so to me, that's where some of the criticism has come from in the documentary (which in essence, invalidates it as a criticism). I need not convince anyone on here about that, but I was somewhat surprised to see the general ignorance of his critics (ie. not realizing Kurzweils statements of Moore's Law and it's overwhelming accuracy, etc...).

The fact that a panel of 9 Harvard oriented professionals could not scientifically debunk Dr. de Grey's SENS program is more than enough proof for the skeptics. I was also somewhat pleased with the short feature on Alcor/cryonics.

I got 2/3 of the way through this, and I don't think it is appropriate. Sure, I understand that AI could bring about immortality, either through solving our biological problem or by enabling us to leave our biology behind completely, but for someone who just wants to understand what Immortalists are all about..it is a very long clip with lots of detail about AI. Something which isn't intrinsically about lifespan extension, eternal youth or longevity.

Unless others disagree with me...

Here is the "Death in the Deep freeze" one from awhile back on cryonics:
http://video.google....612092045110436

There are a ton of Aubrey ones:
http://video.google....=aubrey de grey
(his 2 Ted talks were good)

Charlie Rose did a "Science of Living Longer" show:
http://video.google....070349217621336

Of course, Kurzweil has a bunch up, here he is at the Singularity Summit:
http://video.google....406219828000794

We have a few from our conference presentations, although those might be getting a bit dated at this point:
http://video.google....tute conference

There are a ton of conference presentations and lectures out there like this one, but that might be getting a bit to in depth for some people for an "overview" type of a thing. Also, I guess the ones on reason and stuff probably wouldn't apply to our goals so those probably shouldn't be used. Hmm. Those are just off the top of my head. I'll probably think of more.

I'm working my way through the videos you have recommended LF. The cryonics one wa good (I had actually seen that on TV before). Watching the Charlie Rose one now. Looks like a good general scientific one for highlighting the professional acceptance of longevity research.

PS. Firefox spell check recommends I change cryonics to cryogenics.

What I think I really want, probably at position 1 (or 10 if we display the list in reverse order) is a short 5 minute clip: Immortalism is... sort of style. I may actually make it myself.

Most people don't have the time to watch a single one of these 1 hour long films let alone 10 of them. We need to have a 5 minute one to catch their attention first up, then maybe they will gain an interest and watch the rest later.

There are several short ones out there with Aubrey:

http://video.google....460063764097799
(among many, many others. His Ted Talks were a bit longer at around 20 minutes, but they are pretty good as well)

Also the one Jason made:
http://www.imminst.o...f=3&t=17049&hl=

Of course, there isn't much time for much information if it is a short one, but that is ok. Most people will only watch the short ones I suspect.

The cryonics one was good (I had actually seen that on TV before).

I think "Death in the Deep Freeze" is awful. Within the first 60 seconds, you have the quote

"In order to believe in cryonics, you'd have to believe you could recreate a cow from hamburger."

with footage of frying hamburger. This is followed by

This is the one certainty in all our lives... death.
But a small group of people are attempting to defy the inevitable.
Their ticket to a second life... after they die... etc. etc.

That sets the tone for the rest of the documentary. Whether deliberately, or because of their own preconceptions, they completely missed the most basic idea of cryonics. The idea of cryonics is not to reverse death, create second lives, or defy absolutes. The idea of cryonics is to stop the dying process to obtain a "second opinion" from more advanced medical science. That's it. The only thing being defied is the doctrine of giving contemporary medicine the last word about whether anything more can be done for sick people when their heart stops.

I believe highlighting that documentary would be counterproductive. Although others have criticized the video below for being too slick

http://video.google....earch&plindex=7

at least it gets the basic ideas right.

Yeah, I thought, as Aegist mentioned, that ImmInst's video "Exploring Life Extension" was excellent.

Another couple of videos I found enjoyable were Ray Kurzweil at the Google Zeitgeist conference and the AI debate between Kurzweil and David Gelernter at MIT.

Another thought is that we could have a rotating "video of the week" or day, or top 3 or something that rotate. Just a thought..

"In order to believe in cryonics, you'd have to believe you could recreate a cow from hamburger."

That quote made me cringe too. I can't believe 'professionals' can be so F'ing retarded. That has to be one of the stupidest things said, a completely false analogy, and then yeah, i guess the reporters are equally to blame for using the footage in the end product.

So I agree that there is some stupid stuff in it, but then the channel 4 documentary "Do you want to live forever?" had a lot of stupid negativity in it about Aubrey too. Unless we make everything ourselves, we won't be able to avoid stupid negativity (part of 'both sides of the argument'), and I think that if we make everything ourselves we will lose all credibility. It is a cost benefit analysis where I think we need a few overwhelmingly positive films tempered with some 'even handed' [huh] films by channel 4 and whoever made death in the deep freeze.

I'll watch the other video you recommend also of course, and maybe we won't need to death in the deep freeze one anyway. But I don't think options should be ignored because they have some stupid people saying stupid things.

Hey wow. You're in that film! You look absolutely nothing like I imagined you LOL. Thats cool.

Now obviously this is a much more positive film, but unless I am mistaken, it is basically a sales film for Alcor isn't it? So do we turn people off with stupid negative comments, or do we turn them off with a 'slick' sales pitch?

Are my list so far of films which I think are worthy and particularly relevant. I haven't watched all of the films suggested so far (because they are all so long!) but I will get there, and I will try searching for other ones too. I really think we need at least 2 or 3 good short ones. These full length documentaries are just too overwhelming.

I thought that that would have been obvious by my geographical location.

Admittedly that hasn't stopped me from watching all of the conference videos. I will be sure to watch them all now. (part of sussing this out) Once again though, it takes time. I just got a second monitor yesterday (Dual monitor setup now) so I can watch them while I work on other things conveniently enough)

Well, I was originally going to say "Obviously you didn't go to the ImmInst conference or watch the conference video of Dr. Wowk online at Google vids.", but I thought that was too long of a sentence and seemed a bit over the top since I suspected you had watched the conference videos.

Alas, I now have clarified myself and my air of mystery and ambiguity is gone. [tung]

Great idea, Shane... we should indeed included this on the homepage of ImmInst... perhaps after the list is collected, we could also populate this ImmInst/wiki page:
http://www.imminst.o...xtension_Videos

...which is also linked from the homepage of the wiki, under "Suggested"

Hello Aegist!

Firstly thanks sooo much for the support and kind words. I'm honored that you'd like my film to be on the list.. To be honest the whole time I was shooting the film I kept thinking how much I wanted to make it visceral, personal, scientific and PHILOSOPHICAL. Point being that so many films feel like discovery channel docs (ie: slow and too scientific, hard to relate to)... I wanted mine to resonate the way a movie trailer might make you want to see a movie, buy a ticket. When you watch my short, hopefully you want to learn more, maybe visit one of the websites listed at the end... the idea was to move the audience emotionally.

I'll keep looking for others.

Cheers!

Jason

For many years I've been interested in Health and Nutrition so I thought I'd post the links to a couple of videos I've probably watched dozen times each, especially since they haven't been posted yet. They are the talk by Bruce N. Ames, presented by the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging (SIRA)...

Delaying Aging & Optimizing Health with Supplements & Diet

In fact many of their public lectures have been uploaded onto Google video; you can find them on the following link to the UCTV Google video homepage, excellent resource...

University of California Television

Another video I've watched loads of times, primarily because he is (like Bruce N Ames) such a good speaker, is the presentation by Reinhold Vieth about Vitamin D for the DIRECT-MS website...

Prospects for Vitamin D Nutrition

If anyone knows of any presentations that are as good as the two I posted above I'd definitely be interested in the link, for example I haven't watched all the SIRA lectures.
