No tocopherols.

Why not?

I want all four tocotrienols and four tocopherols.

tocopherols can interfere with tocotrienol absorbtion. Also, tocotrienols are harder to get in your diet.

As far as I know, there is no study that shows that when alpha tocopherol is present in total vitamin E complete content, tocotrienol absorption will be inhibited or suppressed (by the tocopherol). The erroneous reason given was that both tocotrienols and tocopherols compete for the same alpha-tocopherol transfer protein and since tocopherol has a higher affinity towards this protein, the tocotrienols would lose out and not be absorbed (in the presence of tocopherols).

Prof Chandan Sen has also proven this to be not true when he published (in peer-reviewed journal, CK Sen et at.Free Radic Biol Med.2005 Nov 15;39(10):1310-9.) that alpha-tocopherol transfer protein-knockout mice would be able to absorb significant amount of tocotrienols (and restoring fertility), which means that tocotrienols’ absorption does not depend on this transfer protein.

With regard to your question and concern on absorption, I want to share with you the absorption data from Carotech. There are about at least 4 pharmacokinetic studies on absorption and bioavailability of tocotrienols in human. This has resulted in Carotech developing the most bioavailable tocotrienol product in the market – Tocomin SupraBio®, which guarantees an increase of up to 300% (average 250%) of each individual tocotrienols compared to the regular tocotrienol oil extract.

Below is the absolute oral bioavailability of individual tocotrienol:-

Prof. Yuen and his team had reported that the absolute oral bioavailability of d-delta-tocotrienol is the lowest compare to d-gamma- and d-alpha-tocotrienol (KH Yuen et at., Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology 2003, 55: 53-58).

The absolute oral bioavailability for d-alpha-, d-gamma- and d-delta-tocotrienol (from a tocotrienol oil extract) is as follow:-

d-alpha-tocotrienol - 27.7%
d-gamma-tocotrienol - 9.1%
d-delta-tocotrienol - 8.5%

As such:-

- For 50 mg of d-delta-tocotrienol (from Annatto tocotriennol, Delta-Gold) per capsule, the absolute oral bioavailability (blood level) is only 50mg x 8.5% or equivalent to approximately 4.25mg only .

- In comparison, for 50 mg of d-mixed tocotrienol from Tocomin SupraBio® per capsule, the absolute oral bioavailability (blood level) is as below:-

d-alpha-tocotrienol - 14.6mg x 27.7% x 2.5 = 10.1 mg
d-gamma-tocotrienol - 26.6mg x 9.1% x 2.5 = 6.1 mg
d-delta-tocotrienol - 7.0mg x 8.5% x 2.5 = 1.5 mg
Total d-mixed tocotrienol ~50.0mg 17.7 mg

A 4X increase in blood plasma level compared to annatto-delta-gold tocotrienol.

Carotech's Tocomin SupraBio®, ensures increase in absorption of each individual tocotrienols (alpha, gamma and delta-tocotrienol) by up to 300%. Hence, customers are able to lower the therapeutic dosage, resulting in lower cost and most importantly, be guaranteed of increased and consistent absorption for optimum protection

As you can see – the low absolute oral bioavailability of d-delta-tocotrienol – give a negligible amount in the plasma as compare to Tocomin SuporaBio®.

In additional, researchers that use Tocomin SupraBio® human clinical trials found the tocotrienols level in the blood plasma to be significant.

Below are some of the said studies for your reference:-

1. Postprandial levels of the natural vitamin E tocotrienol in human circulation
2. Effects of supplementation with tocotrienol-rich fraction on immune response to tetanus toxoid immunization in normal healthy volunteers

These peer-reviewed papers – pharmacokinetic studies and all the latest human clinical studies with Tocomin SupraBio® confirmed that the absorption of tocotrienols and Tocomin SupraBio® guarantees the absorption of tocotrienols in human despite the presence of alpha-tocopherol in Tocomin SupraBio® or diets.
