Is anyone trying this? Seems like an interesting med. Most experiences, with this substance, I see on the net are from about 2010. I'm interested in trying it but I am hesistant to do so because it is a MAOI and those can bring about serious complications.

I recently did three short trials with it @ 10mg once a day.

First trial:
The first couple days were great. It took away any inkling of anxiety from my temporarily stressful situation. I thought it was improving my cognition as well. I noticed by day three though that my memory was getting worse. Short term memory and working memory seemed subjectively weakened. The fourth day seemed even worse than the third day and I had a business trip that came up.

So I stopped taking it and went out of town on business. When I got back home my work load had increased two-fold and I was feeling overwhelmed. I decided to use afobazole to cope with the anxiety (I am usually very against taking meds to deal with anxiety induced by life situations because of my history, but justified it to myself in that moment).

Trial 2:
It worked for the anxiety. My stack at the time involved other things besides afobazole so I suppose it's not fair to judge it over this circumstance. I started taking 10mg afobazole but had already been taking Stablon (tianeptine) 3 x 12.5mg for over three months.

I noticed a significant cognitive decline. Brain-fog, unclear thoughts, short term memory problems. I decided to add Noopept @ 30mg a day to see if I could overcome the cognitive difficulties. So I dosed for three days with the following

AM: Afobazole 10mg
Stablon 12.5mg
Noopept 20mg

Lunch: Stablon 12.5mg
Noopept 10mg

PM: Stablon 12.5mg

Didn't work. Brain felt like mush and was basically useless at my job. So the anxiety was quelled (also depression was totally cured... felt like a million bucks!), yet my cognition was so bad that I couldn't do my job anyway. So I stopped the afobazole and after a few days.... Everything returned to normal and I started feeling smart again.

Then I decided to try afobazole one more time. Took a 10mg in the morning and once again it made me, for all intents and purposes, retarded. But honestly as far as a depression treatment afobazole + stablon + noopept = awesome. Too bad about the extreme dulling effects it had on cognition. I'm tempted to try breaking the tablets to achieve a lower dosage.

I'm interested in Afobazole for repairing my GABA receptors after years of alcohol abuse. But can't seem to find a way to take it without interfering with my job.

Hope that helps a little.

Is there proof that it would repair gaba receptors?

Not sure if you'd call it proof, but I'd call it at least a partially educated guess. This post by ScienceGuy references this study which I don't have full access to. But in his post he quotes sections of the full text related to gaba upregulation, etc. Maybe he (or anyone with access) can upload the full text of that study for us.

AFOBAZOLE - This is an effective ANXIOLYTIC that also UPREGULATES the GABA SYSTEM and hence should be especially useful in treating BENZO withdrawal. :) READ THIS:

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, Vol. 151, No. 5, September, 2011 PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Effects of Afobazole on the Content of Neurotransmitter Amino Acids in the Striatum in Global Transient Ischemia

V. S. Baykova, I. A. Kadnikov, M. V. Voronin, T. S. Ganshina, A. V. Gnezdilova, A. A. Gorbunov, P. C. Mirzoyan, and S. B. Seredenin

EDITED FROM FULL TEXT:

The objective of this study was to investigate delayed effects of afobazole on the levels of neurotransmitter amino acids in brain structures…

GABA level was significantly decreased in the striatum of ischemic rats. After afobazole administration, GABA level improved and reached the control values recorded in intact animals…

Afobazole administration resulted in restitution of striatal GABA content, which approached the control values; this should promote recovery of neuroprotective systems related to inhibitory influences…

Afobazole administration to ischemic animals resulted in more substantial increase in taurine level in the striatum. Agonistic interaction between afobazole and σ1-receptors, possibly underlies this phenomenon…

Thus, the increase in taurine level alongside with GABA can be regarded as components of recovery therapy…

Our findings led us to a conclusion that afobazole administered in a dose of 10 mg/kg to the animals 40 min after modeling of global ischemia restored the impaired balance of excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in the striatum, normalized their content to control values, and activates endogenous taurine-dependent neuroprotection system…

Anxiolytic agent afobazole (10 mg/kg intraperitoneally) 24 h after ischemia restores impaired balance of excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in the striatum of mongrel rats, normalizes their content to control levels, and activates endogenous taurine-dependent system of neuroprotection.

I know this thread is somewhat old now but I've been taking Afobazol for almost a week and half now. And all in all, I'm going to give it a thumbs up. They say the maxium effects of this product accure after 4 weeks, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how I feel around that time.

What I'm notcing w/ Afobazol is a lessening of my anxiety (social mostly). Doubts, fears and worries havent like totally and magically gone away. I don't think they ever will. But the effects of them are noticably different. My "butterflies in the stomach" feeling has been easied and my heart rate stays, all in all, pretty normal. And when I start creating senarios in my mind of things going wrong I actually feel pretty emotionally neutral about them. They just don't effect me as bad. And since I've read sooooo many self-help books it's a lot easier for me to just tell myself "Ok that was just me making up something bad that could happen here. That doesn't mean it's gonna happen".

So I'm really liking it. I ever went to Las Vegas this last weekend for my birthday alone...well...I really wasn't alone. There are like 100,000 other people there having a good time. lol But I felt very comfortable and had an amazing time. Felt very excited about trying to find a casino that was packed w/ tons of hot women. haha

There are some side-effects I've noticed. The sites say that this product doesn't cause you to feel drowsiness. And that's not totally true for me. I don't feel like passing out but I don't exactly feel like a high energy person anymore. I feel more "laid back". And in fact I'd say that Afobazol seems to neutrolize the effects of stimulants. Sulbutimine and Caffeine seem to have lost their kick.
Another thing I've noticed is a slight headache shortly after taking it. Now I'm not totally sure if it's the Afobazol since I'm back on Noopept and I changed my Choline from Phophatidylcholine to just Choline Bitartrate.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to give a quick update about my trial run of Afobazol.
So, most of what I said before still applies. It does work. But all in all it wasn't totally what I was after. Yes it does lower anxiety and made my negative thoughts a lot easier to manage. And it does mellow you out. So, if you're a Woody Allen type personality I think this might work for ya. But personally I'm going to switch to Phenibut. Again, not because Afobazol doesn't work. It does. But from what I've heard and read I think Phenibut has more the effect I'm going for (Lower anxiety, more sociable and up lifting mood).

By the by, I mentioned in my first post here that stimulants seem to have lost their kick. Well, that does still apply. But that seems to fade very quickly after you stop taking Afobazol. I stopped taking it yesterday and today, just a few hours ago, I took some Sulbutimine and caffeine and I feel the rush again,

I also said that Afobazol might be causing me some small headaches, but I wasn't sure. Well now I'm very sure it wasn't the Afobazol. If anything it might have been tension headaches from trying to still take caffeine.

BTW, not sure what you already know about phenibut, but it isn't sustainable beyond once-in-a-while usage. Are you looking to use it occasionally or for a more regular effect?

Also, can you please share more about the effects of afobazole? You say it helps with negative thoughts and with social anxiety... I may at some point give it a trial run, and am particularly curious if you can say if the effects are mild, moderate, strong.... if it compares with any supplements or drugs you've had in the past.... and if the effects are seen all day/week or only right after taking a dose? Thanks.

Hey how are ya doing. Yeah I'm aware that Phenibut is for occasional use. But the effects I've heard about it are still more inline w/ what I'm after.

And by the by, the sites say the full effects of it kick in around 30 days. I only took it for 20 (one package worth). And during that time I'd say the effects were mostly mild and occasionally moderate. Have you ever smoked weed? Because sometimes I would describe it as having a "stoned attitude" but you're not stoned. If that makes sense. I was just more cool and laid back. I was a lot more content to just sit back in social situations and not feel like I had to be interesting, or funny or even talk. In some ways I felt a little more apathetic and I was ok w/ it. lol
So that part I didn't care for. But I did notice I felt less self-conscious. I didn't worry so much about what others thought about me. I was just gonna be cool and do my own thing. That part I did like.
I've read a lot of Self-Improvement books and usually the techniques they teach you in those books are hard to use because when you've in the situations your emotions kinda take over and overwhelm you. But during the time I was taking Afobazol I found I was really able to keep a clear head.

I haven't really tried any other anti-anxiety supplement or meds before. Unless you count 5-HTP and Happy Pills. In that case I'd say it's way better then 5-HTP by it's self. And it's different that Happy Pills. HPs are uplifting and stimulating -- but I can still feel anxious and nervous on them.

As far as feeling the effects all day/week, etc. Well, this is a drug that needs to build up in your system. I didn't really notice anything till about 2 or 3 days into it. I also noticed that I wouldn't feel it the next morning until I dosed again. If I went out to a couple stores or something before eating and taking my next dose I would feel some nervousness.

Something else I should probably mention is that my sex-drive hasn't decreased ... but I have noticed that orgasms aren't as satisfying.

What do you consider as happy pills? SSRIs? MDMA? Something altogether different?

Thanks for the detailed information. I've been interested in this product for a while.

Be very careful with Phenibut. A few years ago I found out about it and started taking it w/o reading the directions (smart, eh?) for 2 weeks and felt pretty good; not high or anything but I could notice my anxiety was down a few notches. Eventually I went online to read more about it because it did help with anxiety and that's when I realized I should take 2-3 days on then 1-2 days off. I figured it wasn't a big deal and decided not to take it for the next few days. BIG MISTAKE! That was absolute hell. It gave me major panic attacks, vomiting restlessness, etc. etc. After 2 days of feeling horrible I decided to go back on it and try and ween myself off of it. That made the things about 75% better but I still didn't feel pleasant for the next couple of weeks as I got off of it.

A couple more weeks go by and I decide that I'll do things correctly this time. I was on and off of it for a couple of months before finally getting off of it completely and throwing my extra bottles away. I couldn't handle the swings in my mental and physical health. I now know people who use it religiously as directed on the bottle w/ no problems. I also know others who have fallen into the Phenibut back hole and ended up in the hospital.

Basically, if you have even a slightly addictive personality I would recommend trying something else.

Good luck...

Have you ever tried L-Theanine? The way you're describing Afobazole sounds like it's a subtle, calming feeling that comes over you. Nothing close to how Phenibut feels "in the beginning".

He's completely correct ^^. In fact, if you're not completely content with using phenibut for a day or two per week maximum, you'll find out very quickly that it loses it's luster. In the beginning, you can experience any or all of the following: can increase motivation, can do more physical labor, become pro-social and can feel sharper mentally, have less anxiety, improved disposition/mood and, of course, sleep more deeply. Please just google "another phenibut casualty". You'll find out that there are quite a few in-depth horror stories and you'll find successful tapering regimens as well. I was one of those who outlined a better way to get off phenibut after dependence. I wouldn't say that I was addicted in that it didn't adversely affect my day-to-day functioning but I knew that I couldn't just cold-turkey it. I tried. I also tried quick tapers. Then I found the best way for myself. YMMV. Others have discontinued it entirely at a quicker pace while even more are probably still taking it. Without going through the whole story, you'll find the thread and it's a good but long read. There are supplements and other compounds that can help you along the way. One way to help avoid building a tolerance to Phenibut is to use an NMDA antagonist. A chelated magnesium supplement can offer some assistance. Anyways, what you're after could occur for you (if you positively respond to it-some don't. Some people get nausea, feel hangovers etc) when used sparingly. My best advice to you is to devise a cocktail of supplements that you use on varying days to get close to what you're looking for....i.e, less anxiety, more sociability, improved mood etc. Phenibut could be part of this cocktail, but it's surely not the answer. In fact, i'd avoid Gaba agonists or modulators altogether during your off days on Phenibut. Perhaps try some other nootropics as Phenibut downregulates Gaba B receptors, antagonizes PEA, and brushes dopamine receptors quite nicely. After abrupt cessation, you're left with..well, a mess. Even with the slowest of tapers, you'll 'could' encounter more anxiety than baseline, some dysphoria and almost certainly sleep fragmentation for the first little while. Of course, this is after improper dosing protocol and duration. Be weary, it's tolerance ramp is very steep. Otherwise, for many of us, it's a remarkable compound with some excellent therapeutic properties. After a successful taper/supplement regimen, I can still use it now and again with significant positive effect. I rarely ever go over 750mgs/day spread out anymore. I've learned to enjoy it for what it is and reserve it to once or twice every other week. If I use it more than that, it doesn't do jack for me anymore. Again, I don't mean to come off as I'm giving you the only warning, but anyone else who may come across this thread since you may actually use it suitably.

I have just started taking Afobazole today in the morning. What I felt was almost immediate relief from nervousness and restlessness (within around an hour after taking 10 mg). A bit of a headache after the second dose, but I think it is more related to me having a cold right now.
Afobazol seems to be taking away most of the anxiety symptoms immediately (if it's between moderate and severe, as in my case). I haven't noticed any side effects yet (maybe it's a tiny bit sedative, but that's good for calming down restlessness). And anyways, it's too early for final conclusions, I guess.

So, I wanna keep using it for a couple of weeks, just to deal with the anxiety I'm having trouble with at the moment, and then maybe switch to something else.

Not really - I have some Russian friends, who brought it from their last trip to Russia.

Has plenty positive anecdotes, anxiety? stupid not to try as its dirt cheap.

Are you saying Afobazole has worked for you for anxiety? Or were you talking about Phenibut?

Im talking about afo, it didnt help me but i only respond to stims likewise benzo's dont help me either but most anecdotes on it are positive.

I may give it a whirl. Looks like the one on ebay is from Russia. Not much info on it though which is a bit disconcerting.

After 6 weeks it outperformed benzo's and its been trialled for safety in russia + we got positive anecdotes from those that tried it.

Rodent research shows its highly neuroprotective and even works for lupus.

I discovered it 2 years ago and made it well known online.

Update on afobazole - I have been taking it for 20 days so far, and i don't know what the problem is, but I'm feeling really confused right now, and a bit sedated in terms of muscular response. I also came across some strange appetite behaviors (nausea = almost not eating all day; hungry = eating a lot, but even if i eat only proteins i still don't feel full). Feeling pretty anhedonic also.

Strange. At this point I'd consider discontinuing it by utilizing a quick taper. I personally never just completely stop anything and found my body adjusts better this way.

Yeah I forgot to mention I have cut on the dose a bit - 10mg two times instead of 3, because I don't have much left. Looks like withdrawal symptoms, which Afobazole is not supposed to have...Really strange.

Hmm. Not the first time I've heard of something that was not supposed to have withdrawal symptoms and ended up having them. Take care and keep us apprised. Are you feeling any anxiety associated with the reduction in dose? What did you think of it for the first ten days? I almost pulled the trigger on buying some of the eBay seller. Supposed to be Russian.

Hi... I've been reading these posts with interest. I've been seriously considering importing some Afobazole to Australia for my anxiety. I of course have some concerns. It's all a bit of a mystery with the lack of prescribing info available in English. My biggest concern is over drug interactions. I understand that Afobazole has some MAO inhibition activity. I am aware that it is dangerous to mix MAO inhibitory antidepressants with other antidepressants. I am currently on the antidepressant mirtazapine.

The only info I've been able to find on concurrent use of Afobazole in the abstract of the following paper http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/15875941 which recommends combining Afobazole with SSRI antidepressants in some cases.

So my questions are: (1) Are any of you who have tried Afobazol on antidepressants? (2) Does anyone have Afobazole prescribing info (especially on drug interactions) in English or have any further info on the subject?
