Last night I could not sleep the entire night. I can only describe how I felt as symptoms of restless leg syndrome but in my entire body. I had really bad anxiety and felt like every muscle would not sit still and I constantly needed to shift and jerk around and roll over, etc. I think I slept a total of maybe an hour in 20 minute increments. I tried everything to fall asleep I took a low-dose Xanax, Benadryl, a little marijuana, ambien, and a Soma(not all at the same time) but nothing worked. Even right now my back still feels very odd not really a cramp but almost like it needs to be stretched but no matter how much I stretch it the symptoms don’t go away. Last night I even got on my inversion table and it did not help. I was trying to narrow down what it could’ve came from and what I recently added and the only thing I added was Memantine on Thursday afternoon at only 2.5mg and again yesterday afternoon at 2.5mg
This was a very odd side effect I had last night and it’s hard to put into words but the best way I can sum it up is it was kind of like restless leg syndrome but my entire body. I was completely hydrated and did not do anything different yesterday from my normal routine. Any ideas what this could have been from and if that could be a side effect from Memantine?

So the same thing happened last night. I was so frustrated. Even 30 mg Valium didn’t help. I spent the whole night researching what the hell this is and I finally found what I believe to be the answer. It is akathisia. About a week ago my doctor increased my Lexapro from 10 mg to 15 mg. Typically first generation antipsychotics are known to cause akathisia but I have read several reports showing Lexapro can as well. What’s odd is I never noticed this in the past years and years ago when I was originally prescribed Lexapro and Lamical but at that time I was using Cabergoline which is probably why. So finally last night at around 1am I was so frustrated that I couldn’t sleep so I drove to my office and got some Ropinirole I had. I took .25mg and finally around 3 AM I actually fell asleep and woke up without the akathisia. Next week I’m going to see if I can get an appointment with my psychiatrist to see what he thinks about this and if there is a better or safer medication to use other than Ropinirole to combat this akathisia. Has anyone ever dealt with akathisia and if so what fixed it? Thanks
