Hey guys,

Since I have noticed a dramatic difference in what Red Yeast rice has done for my cholesterol levels in the past 2 months of using it, I am wondering if anybody has any experience with what they might consider the most efficacious red yeast rice extract brand?

The one I have been using has lowered my LDL by about 35% thus far. And I am not kidding at all with that figure. I have the blood work to prove it.

My total Cholesterol went from 237 to 227 to 200 in about 5 months using a generic OTC red yeast rice extract and Bergamot. Though I think it's mostly the RYR.

However, I am sure there is a "Most efficacious" brand.

Which is it in your opinion?

There's no difference between red yeast rice and statins, as red yeast rice works because it has lovastatin in it, but in uncontrolled amounts. Unfortunately, statins are a scam on the same order as bloodletting. They might be slightly helpful for some, however, depending on sex, age, smoking status, and BP. See the charts and figures in this paper, and chances are you'll find it's not worth it.

I thought our glorious FDA had pretty much banned the sale of red yeast rice that actually contained any natural statins.

Am I wrong about that?

I answer my own question above -

Harvard Health Publishing - Can I use red yeast rice instead of a statin to lower my cholesterol?

Money quote:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has blocked the sale of red yeast rice supplements that contain enough of the active ingredient to make them as effective as lovastatin because they haven't undergone the drug approval process. Unlike FDA-approved drugs, supplements can be sold without proof of effectiveness and purity.

Now, what I am asking is, in anybodies experience, do certain brands have a more consistent amount of lovastatin than other brands? I know the entire red yeast rice industry is non-regulated but some companies might actually dilute the lovastatin out due to fears of FDA backlash.

I hardly see how the FDA can interfere if it's not stated on the label.

Incorrect.

They are allowed to have it, just not state the specific amount of it on the label.

Now that said, I am quite sure some brands have higher doses than other brands.

I am just trying to weed out which ones

Why not just get a prescription for lovastatin? It's cheap enough, and then you will know the potency.

That Harvard article says they banned the sale of red yeast rice "that contain enough of the active ingredient to make them as effective as lovastatin".  Perhaps that information is incorrect, but it sounds like they are capping the upper limit of lovastatin allowable, not merely preventing it from being listed on the label.

Doctor did not think I needed it at a TC of 226, HDL of 85 and LDL of 130

Newest reading after only a month on RYR is TC 205 LDL 100 HLD 92! Trigs are 62

It's in there!
