A Supplement That Reduces Serotonin Levels?

Is anyone aware of a supplement that is shown to reduce serotonin levels in the brain?
 
Low serotonin is thought to cause pathological mental conditions such as depression.  However, there is some evidence that higher levels of serotonin may be implicated in some forms of anxiety. Which makes some sense, in spite of the fact that SSRIs and SNRIs are frequently prescribed for anxiety and sometimes work.  These drugs have other effects aside from preventing serotonin reuptake, notably increasing BDNF leading to increases in brain volume and dendritic connections. 

 

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a supplement that either decreases serotonin synthesis or acts as a receptor antagonist?

Research this yourself to double check as I haven't looked into this in a while but I believe

1) Feverfew lowers Serotonin. I am not sure if it gets to the brain but I imagine it does as it works on headaches

2) EGCG prevents 5HTP from becoming Serotonin peripherally. This is not what you asked but it may be useful too. I was concerned about serotonin syndrome while taking 5HTP and used EGCG to help prevent it.

Shilajit has some evidence of decreasing serotonin levels.

Activated charcoal lowers endotoxin and therefore likely lowers serotonin, if serotonin levels are a result of the presence of even residual endotoxin:

Aspirin probably  counteracts serotonin (I prefer to take aspirin in combination with Acetaminophen and Caffeine (Excedrin), which I find is more long term sustainable when taken semi-regularly) :

Make sure that you aren't thiamine deficient (if you eat a lot of carbs, drink alcohol, have diabetes, etc). I prefer the standard water soluble form of thaimine.

BCAA -- a simple workout supplement

 

I used to get headaches and retinal migraines when taking BCAA on empty stomach, which is expected with low serotonin levels

oh man, I was obsessed with this specific subject for a while. But I came to the conclusion that nobody's anxiety is caused by excess serotonin or dopamine etc. The three things that cause anxiety from what I've learned is LOW amounts of CB1, high CRHR1 levels in the basal amygdala or too much NMDA activity either one of those three.

I found I highly effective way of eliminating generalized anxiety disorder that may be caused by too much glutamate and NMDA activity — see this thread:

 

Completely eliminated my severe anxiety symptoms with three supplements!  

 

Lots of people tried the anti-anxiety protocol detailed in this thread, which centers on taking N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG), and about 50% said it worked extremely well (but the other 50% said it did not work at all).

 

The anti-anxiety supplements I detailed I suspect work because they may reduce brain inflammation.

 

When you get brain inflammation (which could be due to low-level infection), this is known to release large amounts of glutamate, which activates the NMDA receptor. If this occurs in areas of the brain linked to anxiety, like the amygdala, my guess is that this can trigger anxiety, as glutamate acts as the gain or volume control on neurons, making them more sensitive to firing. 

 

I don't think all forms of generalized anxiety disorder are due to brain inflammation, but where it is, I believe this anti-inflammatory protocol gets to the root inflammatory cause of the anxiety symptoms.

Kudzu root is a 5-ht2c antagonist, but it has a short duration and inhibits Aldehyde Dehydrogenase, causing accumulation of acetaldehyde which may be problematic and cause the "kudzu comedown." This could possibly be counteracted by adding dihydromyricetin but I've yet to test this.

 

Going for something less natural, Tianeptine increases serotonin reuptake in some areas through activating p38 MAPK via the MOR. I've yet to see any studies confirming this directly but it seems highly probable considering it's known to activate p38 MAPK, other opioid receptor subtypes including the kappa receptor also activate this pathway albeit in different locations, and p38 MAPK is known to enhance serotonin reuptake. This is likely location dependent, with Tianeptine enhancing serotonin reuptake in synapses expressing 5-HT2C receptors and KOR agonists such as dynorphin doing this in 5-HT2A or 5-HT1A-expressing synapses, such as the raphe nucleus.

Gelatin is an effective way of reducing serotnin, and it's cheap. You can buy pork or beef gelatin for instance, mix it in hot water and drink. It's has all the amino acids except for tryptophan (the precursor to serotonin), so it depletes tryptophan in the body and therefore serotonin. 

For example: Pharmacokinetics of acute tryptophan depletion using a gelatin-based protein in male and female Wistar rats

 

The essential amino acid tryptophan is the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. By depleting the body of tryptophan, brain tryptophan and serotonin levels are temporarily reduced. In this paper, several experiments are described in which dose and treatment effects of acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) using a gelatin-based protein–carbohydrate mixture were studied in male and female Wistar rats. Two or three doses of tryptophan depleting mixture resulted in 65–70% depletion after 2–4 h in males.
