Is there any way to make GABA work better (ie- get in to brain past the blood brain barrier(BBB)? I've read citruline may help by increasing NO which makes BBB more permeable. Just wondering if there is anything to help or should I just forget about using GABA?

 

Right now 500 mg of GABA gives me more side effects (tingling skin, slight shortness of breath) than good results. Thanks!

Have you played with delivery system?  Maybe try liposomal delivery.

Taurine does affect GABA receptors but this is not same as enabling GABA to pass thru BBB

Picamilon is a chemical conjugate of GABA and niacin which will cross the BBB. Once inside the brain it is hydrolyzed into GABA and niacin.  It was basically designed by the Russians back in the late 1960s to do exactly what you're trying to do and was once part of the standard kit they sent up with their cosmonauts (not sure if it still is).
 
Many report a mild anxiolytic action from Picamilon, but many of those trying it are people that have used benzos chronically so they may have severely downregulated gabaergic systems so that might not hold for someone that is benzo naive.  There is the suspicion that if you took enough picamilon chronically you might down regulate GABA receptors/GABA production in a way similar to chronic benzo use, though my suspicion would be not as severely unless you really went crazy.
