I think it is merited to start this thread also today in response to the same lecture that Peter mentioned in a previous topic/post. The issue of the Singulairty is much balleyhood and little understood.

I was also very impressed by John Smart's talk and have separately invited him to come and participate with us here as well as now suggesting that some of us that weren't previously aware of the organization he represented become aware of thier activities. What follows is the link to his group AcceleratingChange.org and their upcoming Fall conference.

BTW, speaking of accelerated change, besides getting some rest if my output seems like it too is doubling that is because it is. The carrier pigeon modem is finally being relegated to back-up I have gotten a broadband hook up and my productivity more than tripled immediately. [::)]

You've probably just moved up the date of the Singularity by at least two weeks. :)

Whew that is a big compliment as in dog years that could represent a million years off the evolutionary clock. Thanks [!] :))

Congratulations on getting broadband Laz. :) John's message is more acceptable to a broader audience, I think, but it sometimes worries me that he believes the problem of Friendliness in AIs will be solved automatically, and he hasn't recognized the difference between human-produced technological progress and recursive self-improvement, to my knowledge. Otherwise, I'm deeply infatuated with everything he has to say, and look forward to attending his conference in September.

Good [!] another time we should make you an "Official Representative" onsite and get a feedback report after. John and I split a burrito after hours and went out with Anders and some other folks, it was a lot of fun and very interesting conversation. I emailed John some questions that related to our discussion and I haven't heard anything back yet but I expect he is still recovering from his trip too.

I know what you mean about his unflagging optimism but I find that refreshing when combined with an intellect of his caliber.

I do however think that he and I may be closer to one another in one respect as we see the issue as derivative of organic complexity and organization utilizing symbiotic/parasitic paradigms not specificially the "friendliness" paradigm that I suspect to be too anthropomorphic and not likely to be as secure an approach as you do.

That said I did get his attention and he mine so I suspect we will both be pursuing this issue at greater length. I promise to try and get teh paper into a form that you can apply to the Sinularity Institute but I have to switch tasks for the next few weeks to home building so I will be checking out again but it was nice to get Accelerated only hours after getting back from the conference, very synchronous. :))
