See, I don't think there should even be a poll for themes. We should set up a page announcing the calendar and ask members to submit photos and essays based on a question "What does life extension mean to you?" or "Why do you endorse transhumanism?" The participants should be encouraged to give their photos an artistic slant, as realistic or abstract as they want, allowing them to put their own unique interpretation in the photograph. People submit their photos and then we run a poll to see which ones are the most popular. Re-reading the posts I sense a division between whether we should just have hot girls or should include a selection of different ages. If we let the photos get chosen through a poll without a doubt everyone will chose the hottest girls and we'll end up basically with a lingere calendar. Voters won't be able to control their primative nature to 'reward' attractive bodies. The diverse lifestyles of old people, researchers and other demographics will be left in the dustbin, and the multicolored opinions of life extension would be overlooked if left to the polls. I believe to settle the competing interests a second calendar could be commissioned that includes more intellectual champions of the life extension realm. This second calendar can be constructed by staff, and not subject to the whim of popular male opinion.

The calendars would then be published with the photos and essays together. I also think we ought to get some scientist in the life extension field to lend his mug to a page or two. As for celebrities, good luck finding money to draw them in - although I heard Christopher Walken never turns down a job. Let's be honest the only people initially interested in the premiere calendar will be people who frequent the site. I also think that the calendar will be sexy in nature if left to the devices of a poll. Although I can see it becoming a popular handout gift at science conferences such as the TED talks. Immortal Babes Calendar might become the toast of the scientific world and finally get the coverage on TV as intened in the original goal of the beauty pageant. (I'll still help the beauty pageant thing cause it's something that would truly draw the attention of reporters. Any takers?) Anyway with two lines of strategy being discussed, I think we should consider two calendars.

Does there have to be a single theme? Maybe each month can have a new angle, a new message, a new picture and comment to make you appreciate lifespan extension in a new way.

Like all those motivational posters... Oh dear god it's all coming together.

Or maybe not. But you know those motivational poster calenders - the common theme is simply making profound statements. Well, why can't the theme simply be 'lifespan extension' and each month have a new angle on that common theme?

And just FYI, here is an amateur calander which is put together by one guy each year in the canyoning community: http://alternatezone...g/2008calendar/
maybe that will help with ideas.

That is a neat layout. I like it.

Christopher Walken would be awesome :)

I'd love a range of ages :~

But--that is also a great layout, and I like the idea of one square being a small essay, or a paragraph of information. I do feel strongly that each month's theme should include some inspirational aspect of extreme life extension. I think the calendar would attract more people if it was interesting and inspirational. I think we could have quite a popular calendar :)

Because immediately upon hearing of this idea, the first idea I had (probably because this is simply where my mind is at these days) is a few photos very much like the canyoning calendar I linked to previously, with a statement along the lines of "...Because there isn't enough time"

And that is one month done, taking the "need more time to enjoy life to its fullest" angle. Another month might have a photo of someone by a gravestone "...Because no one likes funerals".

etc. Each month can be a different angle on the overall theme, and we can have a new thread each year where everyone submits their best ideas for a monthly page.

Good I like how this discussion is proceeding but I wish we had more general input.

I still think we should poll the members to test the optimal content for picture but let's keep it simple and make only one calendar. BTW, having a web based downloadable one could be made a free perk for all existing members. They could print it themselves in the smaller desktop size but we could still sell the larger glossy ones at the convention. However I think we need to keep the sale price as close to $10 as possible or we are going to end up with a lot of leftovers unless we can get picked up by some book store like Barnes & Noble. we could also sell them through Amazon and we should communicate with the publisher that did our book because they could perhaps offer this service too.

I think the prices at the site you offered Shannon were a little high for the quantity and I am going to check with some local printers like Kinkos.

I also think at some point we need to organize an actual team with a single editor/leader for that team.

We should start a list of events and facts to include and also maybe a contest to *write a 300 word* passage/comment/ idea/etc. for each picture chosen that we could also select from and then include.

The prizes in such contests should be small but I also think we should open the contests up to all the registrants and give them the option of cash or a few months or a year free membership.

*bump*

Of course, I realize all the directors are busy getting things underway for this year, just want to keep this on the long-term radar!

To be ready for a September conference, should probably start soliciting pictures by April at least, IMO.

You are correct Meyusa I didn't forget and this one happens to be prominent on my radar.

So far I was hoping for more input on suggested categories but I will be moving this to the next step soon.

One thing I would also like to ask for would be that anyone interested in working on this as a volunteer for the organizational aspect state that interest upfront so that we might organize a team. I looked at the software that solbanger linked and I am still uncertain how well we can adapt it. Have you downloaded the software Solbanger listed?

I find it too limited for our use but it would be good to locate a similar but more comprehensive application for our purposes.

Could all members of leadership interested in helping with this project check to see if you ave editing access to this on site calendar?
http://www.imminst.o...m/calendar.html

Also check to see what kind of utility it offers members and registered users if any of you are interested in helping. Then just advise us of your results.

I am curious if the calendar gets *personalized* for members but these edits might not be visible to everyone.

The official Imminst Calendar has private and public settings. I think members have the ability to post their own private events, while leadership can post public stuff. Will have to check the Admin area to see the official settings. I like Laz's idea of adding significant/important dates in immortalist history to the 2009 calendar as a template for the calendar project.

This project has not fallen off the radar BTW everyone. I fell off the radar :) Sorry about that.

I have been looking at a few software programs that meet our needs but the most important thing is to obtain a database of relevant info and copyright free or permitted photos.

So far I can include national holidays from US, UK, Canada and Australia. Additional holidays need to be entered individually.

We only need twelve photos but I was thinking that perhaps we could also start an archive of relevant images we are considering for this effort, including Imminst logos etc.

The top 3 programs I am looking at are:

Smart Draw

Calendar Builder

and Easy Calendar Maker

If anybody already owns this software or one that is appropriate to the project please speak up. Entering the event data for 2009 in our Imminst Event calendar as it is developed would be a great place to organize at least some of our info.

So far the database I have been coming up with will need should include:

a) Anniversaries of significant medical discoveries
b) Relevant Conference/seminar dates from organizations and universities already involved in life extension should include our partners in the conference. However the focus of the images and page info will be this organization.
c) Birthdays and 2008 ages (time/date of finalization) of the world's currently living Supercentenarians.
d) Insert your suggestion here......

I encourage everyone interested in helping with this project to PM me directly and contribute to this thread. I am still uncertain about the image theme but I would really like to get some images from Natasha Vita More and other Transhumanist artists. When it is their own work and they donate the images we do not have to worry about copyright.

I am willing to run a contest for images among with a small cash prize out of my Director's account. The images submitted would have to be personally created, free of copyright and on topic (still to be established). We would also pay anyone that submits original images we do use some established amount or they can treat the amount as a donation.

A site to start with.
History of the Health Sciences World Wide Web Links

Dates in History

NYTimes this day in history

On This Date Google Book

Famous Birthdays

I will add to this list as I find the sites.

I think all these images would make good pictures for this idea if any of them arent copyrighted.

http://www.imminst.o...p;showentry=263

If you get this made then you can save it at that calendar site and anybody interested can just go there and order as many copies as they want right? That would be an awsome tool to have. I would order them all the time.
