The same way we can't make people stop using cars, we can't tell them not to smoke. But I do think that in public places, this should be illegal, you all know why.

I voted Only in public places

But we can tell people to stop using cars (at least, in many countries--usually the more modern ones), if they are abusing them (such as driving drunk).

Frankly, I LOVE smokers. I love the taxes they pay. And I know that they're so mind-f#cked by the addiction that they will keep smoking even if taxes are doubled. So, that's what I would do: jack up those taxes, and take advantage of the fact that most smokers can't quit!

And just maybe, this would have the nice little side effect of keeping more kids from falling into this expensive life-long weak-minded habit that has no positive benefit, except paying for huge houses and great vacations for the tobacco company execs.

I agree with Duke on this one. We should make the price of cigarettes more than 10 times higher than they are now so the government can collect all the taxes. The smokers who are mind f#cked form the addiction will continue to pay or be forced to quit.

It should in my opinion certainly be banned in public indoor places.

Not outside - if you want to ban smoking outside then you might as well do away with all forms of transport everywhere which emit pollutants that are probably more harmful to peoples lungs than walking by a smoker. Might as well ban the sun (and a whole load of other things) while they're at it - too much of those rays can cause skin cancer if you don't use proper protection!

If a country has more socialist policies with regard to healthcare then people who willingly damage their health by smoking should have to pay for their own treatment.
Governments in an ideal situation would make sure warnings are everywhere and the people are highly educated about the consequences of their lifestyle choices.

Parents should have to be warned and advised (by law) by their doctor about the possible consequences of passive smoking - their child's health is ultimately their responsibility.

The problem is people find ways around problems like this. It's not illegal to grow your own tobacco, and people WILL go through the trouble. A friend of mine was buying tobacco on the internet by the bag and rolling his own cigarettes. I was staying at his place to weather a hurricane a few years ago and spent the time rolling cigarettes just to see how the stuffing machine worked. It was actually pretty neat.

If by "public places", you mean publicly owned land/buildings, then sure, ban smoking there. But I suspect by "public places" you in fact mean privately owned businesses like bars, restaurants etc. Banning smoking in the private places like the two I just mentioned is tyranny.

A public park
An outdoor sports stadium everywhere
An outdoor sports stadium in the seats
Bars
Restaurants
Airplanes
Public Libraries
Your child's preschool, in the classroom
A pulmonary intensive care unit where a loved one was a patient

the above list is full of red herrings. No hospital would allow smoking in a pulmonary intensive care unit whether it was publicly or privately owned. And if you send your kids to a classroom where smoking is permissible that is equally absurd.

Anti smoking legislation is presently becoming so absurd that there are people who aren't allowed to smoke inside their own homes. I would hope that one will not take too many court appearances to be struck down, but the world we are living in is increasingly against personal freedom.

Phew, at least there's some sane people on here.
Those that voted no. You people are clowns, it's morons like you that will slowly take everyones rights away. Who the hell do some of you think you are ? deciding what you think people should do with their lives ? who's your role model Hitler ?

No i do NOT smoke.
