The Personal UV Monitor from Oregon Scientific is the only tool you'll need to know at exactly what second to run for cover on days when the Ozone layer is on vacation. Sunbathers can use the power of science to maximize their tans and minimize burns. To set up your personal exposure timer, enter the SPF of the sunscreen you have on, and your skin type (ranging anywhere from "alabaster" to "distinctly pigmented"). Now when out in the sun hit the UV button , and the UV sensor will detect the current UV level. Now you can sizzle at ease knowing that your monitor will beep when it's time for you to set yourself on a cooling rack.

Its cut and pasted from the product page, so yes the text is from an advertisement. However, the purpose of the zoolander's post is to inform (that such a thing now exists), not to advertise that particular product.

I did know about UV monitors. The reasons I would consider getting one would be to test indoor and outdoor lighting for UV levels. Some lights such a tungsten halogen lamps and Metal Halide and Mercury Vapor Lighting actually give out UV light.

For a more comprehensive view of UV meters available and why/ how you should use them check out the Xerodermia society website:
