I've learned a lot about the damage the sun does to the skin here, about sun screens and sun lotions. But what if I messed up and had to walk in the blazing sun for half an hour to get to a bus stop, with most sun screen rubbed off? Is there something that can be applied to the skin just after you've burned it that helps against the damage? I had a look at some of the after-sun lotions in the stores. Any of you skin gurus know if they work, and how? Thank you for all your knowledge :~

I'm no skin expert but anything that repairs damage can be looked at as an "after sun treatment".

Retin-a, IPL, peels, etc.

I've wondered this too, maybe the eminent skin expert Eva Victoria could recommend any particular after sun lotion..

UV light mostly causes an increased number DNA double strand breaks (UVA) and strand crosslinks (UVB),
and the "after repair" is done by your DNA ligase: http://en.wikipedia....wiki/DNA_repair

If you don't block the ROS while they happen, you can help with NSAIDs, pantothene and other
vitamins to help enzymes rebuild the cells after the damage... but not much beyond that.

Further, LEF recently reported about research with taking fern (P.leucotomos) extract against sun
damage, and here are three studies from that. Theoretically, if you ingested this fern stuff right
after exposure you could still limit the damage (but before would be more beneficial):
