To feel fully rested, I need 7-8 hours of sleep. I feel just fine sleeping 6 hours or so, though, but not as alert as otherwise.

I'm somewhere between 6 and 7.5. Though, I prefer 8.5-9.

9 hours is heavenly, between 6.5-8 is optimal.

6 hours sleep is OK, but getting into bed much later than midnight makes the next day feel really crappy. Guess I'm getting used to downregulated inflammation after years of supplementation :p Getting into bed late increases inflammatory genes like no other schedule, latest of the papers here: http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/19110131

I'm surprised there's so few sleep deprived here. I put myself at 7-8 but without supplements it's usually more like 4-5.

I get 6-7 hours a night. As someone above said, 9 hours a night of sleep would be heavenly, but i can function without any noticed impairment on 6-7 hours of sleep on average.

I would prefer none at all if optimal functioning was still possible. But currently 6-7 is needed.
Any past, present, or future polyphasic sleepers here?

So much for functioning well. Just lay my head on my arms to rest a little here at the computer's table; woke up 20 mins later by my sister entering the room :p . This happens sometimes...

I usually get 5-6, but I would rather have 7-8.

If I sleep less than 8-8.5 hours I feel terribly tired. I can never sleep more than 9 hours though..

I do pretty well with 7 hours these days. I used to think it was impossible, I thought I needed at least 8 hours, preferably 9, but the important thing seems to be WHEN I sleep instead of how much. To a degree at least. For example, from 11:30 PM to 6:30 AM is almost impossible for me, whereas from 02:00 AM to 09:00 AM is very feasible.

I probably average 5.5 hours/night. On the rare occasion I get 7 or 8 I notice markedly improved strength, lack of fatigue, etc., but I'm too obsessed with doing too many things during waking hours. Hayflick once stated, IIRC, cutting back on sleep is the best way to lengthen one's life (qua waking life). Nevertheless, it's a bit of a trade off between time and quality, to some degree, IMO.

RADIOACTIVE:
I tried polyphasic sleeping once. Physiologically it worked, but not as well as >7h normal sleep. The reason for me to completely drop it was because I couldn't fit it into my daily life schedule. Anyone have any idea if polyphasic sleep could be particularly healthy or unhealthy?

mixter:
Interesting info. Doesn't the sleep cycle adjust to the offset after a while or something?

Huh. Why did I put this poll into the supplements section? Probably didn't get enough sleep for clear thinking. XD

The more people vote, the more gaussian the results look. :-)

What's interesting is that there are some extreme cases, of <5 and >10 hours.

I voted 6 - 7, but on Friday and Saturday I probably get 8 - 9. I'd probably do better consistently having 7 - 8.

I'm the <5 vote... averaging 4hrs per night. Trying to get back to 6.5... anything more than 8 and I feel like crap the next day.

Sun, Mon, Tues nights I sleep 6-10hrs; Wed, Thurs nights I don't sleep; Fri, Sat I sleep during the day for ~5 and ~9 hrs respectively. I've been doing this for about 3mo., prior to that I got slightly more sleep, but in all reality I feel fine. If anything my body has a hard time keeping up with my mind.

Threw away the alarm clock a decade ago, so I get whatever my body needs to accomplish its repairs. That's usually 8-9 hours if I haven't been boozing, open-ended otherwise.

The more people vote, the more gaussian the results look. :-)

Wow! You mean the Central Limit Theorem actually works as advertised! ;-)

Anyone sleep <0 or >24 hours/day? :-)

On a more serious note, shouldn't we all try to get our amount of sleep to about 7 hours?

Vanity plays a part with me. I function well on 6-7 ... but look like crap ie dark around eyes etc. I shoot for 8 and generally end up with 7. Also are people talking about actual sleep or what time they go to bed? The whole "as soon as my head hits the pillow" vs " lay there tossing and turning until finally.." aspect i sa thread in itself and does potentially skew accuracy.

Increased Death Rate Associated
With Sleeping 8 Hours or More

I feel quite confident in saying this is wrong. Sleep however much you need, if you need more than 9 hours don't force yourself to sleep anything less than this. Your body knows what it needs, and if you go into a healthier state then you will need less sleep and feel just as well rested. Many people on CR (which improves health) report sleeping fewer hours. They can do this simply because they're healthier. Restricting sleep will increase mortality I think.

I don't know you can make the claim that people on cr sleep less because they are healthier. A more accurate statement in my opinion would be those on cr sleep less due to higher sympathetic tone.

I get anywhere from 5-7 depending on the day of the week. If I sleep more than 7 I wake up with a headache, most likely from grinding my teeth.
