my site which isn't quite open yet. here is the premise:

TheFabricator.org

Can you put a civilization in a box?

What would it take, if some humans were transported to some barren place,
without the comforts of modern life, and had to rebuild everything? How long
would it take to go from sticks to steam? Or from washed up on shore to
rockets?

Depressingly long. In fact, most people in modern society have little idea
about how ANY of our technology works, partly because we're encouraged not to
care, and partly because it's far too expensive to build things nowadays.
Today is not a period of tinkerers, but one of consumers.

In particular is the problem that much of our technology is simply too
expensive and exclusive for most people to touch. And in some cases
experimentation is illegal!

This site is dedicated to two things.

ONE: my project and initial inspiration for this website, discovering,
collating, and publishing detailed instructions for a complete build up from
nothing, to micron-scale engineering. A breakdown of the steps required, the
skills neccesary, and the tech designs to do so. If such a project proves
unfeasible, I'll settle for the worlds largest repository of practical
engineering designs.

TWO: by collating practical step by step engineering knowledge. I hope to
ensure that technology never becomes the sole province of the rich and
influencial, or possibly even worse, the sole province of government. I aim to
make available to all people who wish to put in the time and effort, the
ability to build, test, and use advanced technologies.

If theFabricator.org is successful in it's goals to collate such information. I
may publish a book detailing the more pertinent information. Such a project
would be a real accomplishment, and I consider it a wonderful and unique
opportunity possibility.

Please keep in mind that the project is in it's early stages, and the
information on this pages is as current as I can discover and test it.

Please direct your comments, suggestions, and idea submissions to the
webmaster.

The Foxfire series as a website and and brought into the 21st Century as a kind of Galactic Encyclopia Project a la Asimov's Foundation Series. I like it.

There should be cross links to the site, http://www.howstuffworks.com/

There is a large amount of very practical technology answers to be found there along with very useful links.
