I almost fell out of my chair while reading a transcript of a recent interview with Jeb Bush by Tucker Carlson. Here is the part of the interview that made me literally fall out of my seat (link to original article is at bottom of message):

(Carlson): What do you read every day?

(Bush): I read The New York Times. I read The Wall Street Journal. I read the Sayfie Review, which is about Florida politics. I'm reading a wild book. It's The Singularity Is Near. [The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology, by Ray Kurzweil] The book is about how technology is going to overtake the human mind. There's basically like an L-shaped advancement that's going to take place. There's a convergence of our own intellectual capacities and technology. There's going to be a merger, and we're going to, this guy believes, live in an era of unbelievable intelligence and advancement. It's wild.

(Carlson): Do you buy that?

(Bush): I'm reading to learn.

Not much use now.. he could have handed the book to his brother while he was president but that would probably also not make any difference as i doubt he would buy into that.

I think his brother would need someone to read it to him, maybe an edition with more pictures would help too :-).

Nah, I see the utility in this. If we can get conservatives to start seeing these ideas as at least interesting we can make some headway.

Wonderful thing about books, they get spread around ;) the longer they are out there the more the ideas get shared.

PS Tripper, thanks for sharing here, more discussion usually occurs here than some of the email lists, I saw your post at Cryo-net and Universal Immortalism--its nice that you help out so much in the extreme life extension field ;)

Thanks Shannon for the compliment. I am a great admirer of all the work you do on behalf of this and many other organizations. Keep up the good work!

Too bad his brother didn't read the part about oil becoming useless due to the exponential growth in solar power, maybe we could have spared a million or so Iraqis.

While it's generally not a good idea to politicize science, Jeb Bush is a public figure respected by many people, and may be useful. We should make an effort to contact his office.

I believe there is a place for a new conservative platform embracing technology, and Jeb Bush may be one among many to embrace technology as a platform for distributed, free-market innovation.

With that said, aligning a social/scientific movement with political movement may be counterproductive, and while we certainly have a policy platform, it may be counterproductive to introduce our memes to politically charged dialog. This is potentially a great opportunity, but we should tread carefully.

Nice find, and I second Shannon's welcome and thanks!

It would be good to get some conservative politcos on our side. I am a believer that there is a paper wall between our ideas and certain conservatives. Even many religious types may jump on life extension/H+ ideas once they get past the usual cynicism inbuilt in us towards any new technology. The trick is finding the right groups to promote to.

If Jeb Bush is reading "The Singularity is Near," then he has already discovered us, and we may not need to do anything else, because as me and Shannon discussed, most "VIP's" are super busy with all kinds of stuff. But, having said that, I know nothing of what Jeb Bush is doing now, but I doubt he would want to be contacted by fringe, grassroots groups with little clout like imminst. But I could be wrong. I mean we do have a VIP project team, so that means we at least think it's possible. There's some contradiction here I think.
