Halcyon Molecular, Inc., is a Silicon Valley-based nanotech startup developing an ultra-low-cost DNA sequencing technology based on electron microscopy imaging of heavy-atom labeled DNA. We are currently seeking to hire talented and driven experts across a wide range of expertise relevant to scaling our technology. Interested parties should send a CV to careers@halcyonmolecular.com. Ideal candidates will have:
  • Up to date knowledge of current research techniques in your fields of expertise
  • Good working/practical knowledge of equipment.
  • Well connected in your field
  • You may not fit into one of the positions below exactly, but have skills applicable to multiple positions or are exceptional in a particular area.
  • Open to new ideas (not dogmatic)
  • Can take responsibility for a project and drive it forward with minimal supervision
  • Not afraid to jump into a new field and learn as needed
  • Experience with startup environments a plus
  • Able to move to Stanford area (or already there).


Position: Nanotechnologist (1-2)

General Skillset/Background: Nanotechnology, applied physics, semiconductors, and/or surface chemistry.

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • STM, AFM, force measuring of molecules
  • Surface science/coatings/flatness/chemistry/engineering/physics
  • Mechanical force experiments on DNA in solution and in air
  • SAMs
  • ALD
  • STM in UHV
  • UHV hardware and operations
  • Deposition techniques, thin films
  • Cryogenic temperature experiments
  • Building novel micro/nano devices and associated instrumentation
  • Robotics and automation
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Microfabrication: wet and dry etching, lithography


Position: Microfabrication Engineer (1)

General Skill-set/Background: Microfabrication, semiconductor fabrication, materials science.

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • MEMS
  • Wet/Dry etching techniques. CVD, Plasma deposition,
  • Someone to work in the SNF, knows lots of processing stuff
  • Atomically flat surfaces
  • Thin films
  • Silicon TEM Grid production


Position: Electron Microscopist

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) operation, design, repair/maintenance
  • Some electronics understanding
  • Excellent understanding of EM theory
  • Experience with JEOL, FEI, other scope types
  • Single atom sensitivity imaging
  • Low dose imaging
  • We will separately consider entry level technicians with some experience in TEM operation


Position: Electrical Engineer (1)

General Skill-set/Background: Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and programming.

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Basic Analog and Digital Circuit Design capabilities
  • Programming skills - Labview preferred. C, Assembly
  • GPU programming
  • Basic assembling skills to build up circuits.
  • FPGA Experience
  • DAQ experience - Standalone and PC instruments
  • IT Skills/Troubleshooting
  • System integration and testing


Position: Image Processing and Data Pipeline Architect (1-2)

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Large volume automated image processing
  • FPGA programming
  • Continuous imaging modes
  • Matlab programming
  • Read mapping and assembly simulations and algorithm development
  • Fourier transformation
  • Image analysis
  • Database management
  • High throughput data streaming
  • Data simulation
  • Experience assembling hardware for imaging systems


Position: Organometallic Cluster Chemist (1-2)

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Organometallic chemistry
  • Cluster chemistry
  • Nucleic acid chemistry and labeling/modification
  • Industrial scale chemistry
  • Automation
  • High purification methods
  • Molecular biology experience a plus
  • Creative novel cluster compound design and synthesis
  • Will consider highly talented individuals with experience in other fields of chemistry


Position: DNA/Chemistry Technician (1-2)

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Experience working with high molecular weight DNA (+100kb)
  • DNA isolation from human cells
  • DNA chemical labeling
  • Chemical ligation
  • Rolling Circle Amplification
  • PFGE/SCODA
  • Clean room protocol
  • Bioinformatics knowledge a plus


Position: Systems Engineer

Background: Scaling our technology is a complex engineering project requiring careful management. The Systems Engineer will take a leading role in managing the project, making sure resources are allocated efficiently, sub projects are not falling behind, and subsystems are integrated effectively. Contributing to the design of the integrated complete sequencing system will also be part of this role.

Specific skills and areas of expertise:
  • Extensive theoretical knowledge of a wide spectrum of engineering fields.
  • Experiencing managing engineering projects on the scale of 25+ persons.
  • Instrument design
  • Sequencing or microscopy instrument design a plus

Wow, I definitely didn't see this the first time around. Must have had to do with the 1 hour time outs keeping me from being logged in most of the time I spent on here. This sounds like a great method to pursue so long as sufficient data throughput from the electron microscope is possible.
