I consume no caffeine regularily but today I decided to have a "Rockstar" drink to assay it's potential value.

I drank the whole thing, containing:

2000mg Taurine
400mg Guarana
100mg Inositol
400mg L-Carnitine
1000mg D Ribose

Assorted B vitamines and an unknown amount of Caffeine.

What interested me is that the clarity of mind and stimulation I felt some 3 hours after drinking felt much cleaner and more like an amphetamine than ordinary caffeine. The caffeine I felt right after drinking it and with the usual nervousness and giddiness of mind.

I'm curious which of the above ingredients play a role in the total effect of one of these beverages? Or rather, what would the effect be like if we removed the caffeine from the beverage, or the taurine, etc etc? Has anyone had plain guarana or taurine or inositol to compare to caffeine?

Any opinions?

Guarana is a herb that is a raw source of caffeine and similar stimulating chemicals. There is no standard for guarana so it is difficult to determine what and how much a serving contains, but it definately has the potential for noticable effects. Beyond-a-Century sells guarana, and I think it is available at most health food outlets. IMO that is most likely what you felt, if it wasn't entirely due to the caffeine-sugar.
Has anyone had plain guarana or taurine or inositol Yes to all three. Guarana is the only one that I can "feel". Similar to a pretty large jolt of green tea.

I'm curious about other people's use of energy drinks as well. Frankly, since getting off of Adderall, I have found nothing is more effective at giving me a similar energy and focus throughout the day than the Lo-Carb Monster Energy drink. It contains (among other things):

Taurine 1000 mg
Panax Ginseng 200 mg
Energy blend 2500 mg
(L-Carnitine, Glucose, Caffeine, Guarana, Inositol, Glucuronalctone, Maltodextrine.)

I used to take caffeine pills, but this drink doesn't have the negative effects of caffeine pills, in my opinion.

One BIG problem is that it tastes nasty! If it came in one pill, I'd be very happy.

The "Monster" energy drink does taste quite nasty. I personally like the Sobe Adrenalin Rush, tastes great and makes you feel great.

I'll try it, then. Thanks. BTW, because of your name, Dopamine, I suppose I should mention that with the "Monster" drink, I have also, for the past week, been taking a drop of Selegiline. I am HOPING it's not the placebo effect, but I've felt absolutely fabulous lately, in a noticeable improvement over pre-Selegiline.
