@ Mike_N

Your choices pretty much reflect my opinion & regimen, besides green tea which wires me!
What's your rationale for choosing these?

From what I understand, ALCAR does everything that ALA does and more. Plus it has a higher bioavailability. Personally I take between 500 and 750 mg of ALCAR daily at some time between breakfast and lunch.

My mistake, I confused ALA with L-Carnitine somehow.

To answer your question...

ALCAR and ALA do work synergistically, although it is not necessary to take ALA with ALCAR.

A couple of quotes from another thread:

Well, ALCAR and ALA do work synergistically. A hallmark of aging is decreased mitochondrial function while at the same time ROS production becomes increased. ALCAR increases mitochondrial capacity and ALA decreases ROS, so they complement each other to provide a rejuvenating effect on the mitochondria. The reasoning Ames etl al. initially had for supplementing ALA together with ALCAR has been the concern that ALCAR would increase ROS to an even greater extend, but later studies have shown that this doesn't seem to be the case. Consequently, you don't necessarily need to take ALA together wit ALCAR but they make a good team nontheless.

Because the original experiments on rodents were performed with ALCAR doses that were too high, causing oxidative damage that was mitigated by ALA. Later dose-ranging experiments found that lower doses of ALCAR actually worked better than higher doses for mitochondrial rejuvenation without the need to co-supplement with ALA.

All this has been discussed in detail in some older threads on this forum.

It's been a while since I last posted, and I am biased because Dr V and I make formulations and supplements (and I hate limiting it to 5)...

So my caveat is that you need a multivitamin in addition to these, ok? So here goes...

1- MetaCurcumin

2- Polydatin (yeah PolyMAX for me!)

3- ProxyStem (A lot of stuff in it like D3, E , B6, Siliphos, ashwaganda, etc, so this might be cheating).. so if I had to choose 1... then Siliphos

4- Micro ressveratrol in some nice emulsions

5- C60 in carrier oils (not olive oil for me)

6- Dammit.. I have to put in Lithium and PQQ as well .. and ahh I can say enough about Folate  and.. (so many others as well.. I'll just shut up now)

Cheers

A

1. Coffee (every day for a variety of reasons).

2. Silymarin / Milk Thistle (2 capsules every few days for general well-being or as needed when taking something that could be hard on my liver or kidneys).

3. Real EV Olive Oil (1/2 teaspoon per day - one needs to do brand homework to get the real thing as most OO in the grocery store is presumed to be fake. Real OO does not have to be more expensive, one just needs brand awareness. My last bottle was $7-8. Love those polyphenols).

Call me a minimalist, but over almost two decades of taking supplements nothing else has really been sustainable, due to side effects, or otherwise continuously effective for me.

Things I use as needed, but could not do without:

1. Excedrin (migraines or any type of perceived neural inflammation - I know, I know, but, truly, nothing beats it and the silymarin protects me).

4. Activated Charcoal (any stomach malady: invaluable. It should be figuratively in everyone's first aid kit along with the band-aids and neosporin).

Stuff I have actually seen evidence of actual increases in lifespan in rats:

1. rapamycin

2. selegiline
3. creatine
4. c60oo

And most likely to improve healthspan:

5. melatonin

Honorable mention would probably go to metformin. The rest you can just get from lifestyle changes: eat fish, drink coffee, exercise often, restrict meth/cyst, take a sauna, get vaccines, sleep well, etc.

my opinion: less supplements and more healthy food (avoid milk, bread, processed, coffee, tea, cola, fruit juice, avoid fruit, vodka, and all sugars, trans fats, and eat more olive oil, coconut oil, meat and fish, vegetables, oxidized garlic, filtered water, beer, leaks, natural yoghurt etc. half an hour of exercise per week max, any more is stressful, plenty of sauna and cold showers.

1. resveratrol (I use in alcohol under the tongue)

2. zinc

3. vitamin b12 (hydroxide)

4. ginseng

5. h2o2 (peroxide) for mouth rinse, and cleaning ears to prevent colds)
