Great taste in music Rol. I'm a huge fan of the Pixies. More people should be exposed to their music.

You missed one artist that deserves to be recognized here:

Wow, what an oversight indeed. Thanks for the reminder! More seriously, I did neglect to include The Velvet Underground and Gustav Mahler, but I've already embedded way too much media, so I'll leave it to other users to become acquainted with their music. And you're right, the Pixies are definitely under-appreciated, and I suspect that had they not gone their separate ways in 1993, they would likely be more renowned.

This has got to be my favorite live Led Zeppelin vid:

Jimmy Page is just sensational with his guitar play. Robert Plant's just clearly under the influence of some stims (he says cocaine). Rock stars...

Here's some good old Fugazi. I'll be back with more music that contributed to movement towards the indie and alternative bands we have today.

This is a great find! Youtube is a treasure trove for these kinds of videos, which in this case, is much better than the studio version that I have. Plant is definitely coked up, but you're right, what rock star of this era wasn't? It just constitutes a fascinating component of their natures, and represents their mechanism for channeling creative energy and pursuing the hedonistic spirit that defined the era. To be clear, though, I'm not endorsing the use of hard and illicit narcotics kids!

These guys are definitely very cool, do you know if they've cited their major influences? I can think of the obvious ones, but I'll have to listen to this piece several times to detect the other possible influences.

Hmm, It might be easier to think of bands that became hugely popular in the early nineties that considered Fugazi to be one of their major influences. Bands like the Pixies, Nirvana, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rancid come to mind. Fugazi was originally Minor Threat, who I believe made Rolling Stone's top 50 list for punk rock bands. I love that they are from Arlington, VA and Washington, D.C.-where they played locally and started to gain fame. I'm from the D.C. area. Fugazi and bands like Bad Brains were part of what was a very well known D.C. punk scene. Henry Rollin, who ended up moving to L.A. and fronting Black Flag, is from D.C and was the front man for a band part of that D.C. scene. Those were some of the good old days of punk rock.

You should try to get a hold of the cd 13 songs http://www.google.co...AwG7xqg&cad=rja

Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I remember one of the members of Fugazi saying that Joy Division was a heavy influence. I think their influences and tastes in music were all over the place actually. The obvious ones you are probably thinking of are The Clash, The Ramones, David Bowie, etc.

Forgot about Iggy Pop and The Stooges. I love Iggy Pop. I have yet to listen to much of the Stooges, but I plan to soon or whenever I feel good again. Lately I cannot really "feel" music. It's a fucking nightmare.

This being the Iggy thread, I ran across this 2001 piece from The Onion that needs to be filed under 'life imitates art'. (Royal Caribbean apparently reads The Onion, or, um, maybe they should have.)

Rol, I can move the thread; where would you like it?

Like the artist formerly known as Prince, Sting provokes some rather strong feelings, and if I ever encountered him, I might feel compelled to subject his stupid smug face to a merciless beating (and who knows what I would do with the artist formerly known as Prince?). But I do like his work with The Police, though:

Joy Division, huh, I can see that. As for feeling music, I'm assuming a depressed mood is interfering, right? If that's the case, I've been there. You just have to saturate yourself with music constantly, and sooner or later, its effects will become more appreciable, and you'll develop the urge to reflect on what you're hearing. Music is a vehicle for feeling good, so feeling good shouldn't have to precede listening to music.

I agree that saturating yourself with music can help, but I think there is too much going on here chemically that is interfering with my ability to not just enjoy music, but many other things. I am depressed, but am also bipolar and experience tons of anxiety. I fear that after medication trials and severe mixed manic episodes, my brain simply is not what it used to be, and one of the results of this is not being able to fully enjoy music the way I used to. I imagine the same things happens to us when we get old. I need to get my medications straight, and, heal my body enough to be able to enjoy working out again. There may be something else going on here aside from depression and neurochemistry, which is why I am seeing a neurologist currently and will soon see a rheumatologist and possibly a Lyme specialist.

Enough about me, here is more old school alternative music from the70s, 80s and early 90s. Some of this stuff may be perceived as being on the "gay" side, but I loved it growing up and still enjoy it today.

I'm sorry to hear that...
Have you undergone neuropsychiatric tests? It should also be noted that cognitive effects of bipolar disorder aren't permanent or in anyway analogous to other neurodegenerative diseases. But can be restored with agents that influence neuroplasticity, and the stability of the aberrant mood cycle. I remember you mentioning that you were taking Lithium, but I'm wondering if your dose was too high? Doctors are still trying to master the appropriate therapeutic dose for each patient, and I strongly suspect that the average administered dose is way too high. Anyway, hang in there, because you've already have come this far, and have much to live for.

As for your music choices, I wouldn't consider them gay, since New Order is especially very cool. And your choices are certainly not as unbecoming as my reluctant postings of Don Henley and Police videos. The very thought of liking some of Don Henley's music provokes powerful feelings of self-loathing---because I despise him as an individual, and hate much of his musical work so very much---which constitute musical crimes against humanity.

Lol, your comments about Don Henley are hilarious. I listened to some good old Eagles back in the day. The worst of all their songs that I was in to and still enjoy occasionally(while I make funny faces and dance to it doing the microphone thing) is "The New Kid in Town".

As far as my recovery is concerned, yeah I'm not feeling too confident. I am physically limited right now and I'm not sure if I will even make as much as a 50 percent recovery. Working out and being able to perform physically in many ways was like therapy for me, I flat out needed it. It's a long complicated story bro, but I'm not getting better, and in some ways, I'm getting worse.

I don't know if lithium is the culprit, I was only taking 600 mg. Also, I've experienced this inability to enjoy music and other pleasurable things before. I just added Depakote to the mix, so I'll be taking 500 mg depakote and 600 mg lithium. I may lower the dose of lithium to 300 mg if I feel better with the addition of depakote.

Yeah things are rough right now. Two years ago I had a few surgeries and planned on being back to feeling comfortable and performing better in many ways. Now, I would LOVE to get back to the way my body felt two years ago. I may have fibromyalgia, evidently it is common with pathologies like bipolar. Who the fucks knows exactly what's going on with me. I think it's just a whole lot of damage, mind and body. All I know is I wake up and I feel like I'm 80 years old, I can't really enjoy music at the moment, and I chase after satisfying pleasurable feelings from eating food but never really get them.

I really don't think I will be able to feel things the way I used to unless I am on a good antidepressant. I'm also going to need to do some serious healing of the body. I'm the kinda guy that was wild and crazy, the life of the party(I know it's typical of some bipolars). I was very athletic, loved dancing, thrived off of going out and being socials, and love making people laugh. I was ALIVE then. Now I just exist. I live with my father. I work four days a week. 24/7 anxiety, fuck. I know I have more life to live, but living just is not the same when you can't truly enjoy things and have fun. I don't even FEEL good weather very often. Like I said, it's complicated. LOL, I should be PMing you instead of talking about this shit here.

O.K., more music:

Your symptoms are more suggestive of anhedonia, which means an inventive cocktail of antidepressants and stimulants would be in order, not more mood stabilizers. But then again, I'm not that familiar with your case, so maybe your current dose of mood stabilizers is appropriate. Have you tried any stimulants before, because it seems like low norepineprhine and dopamine levels might be the culprit. And thanks for the uploads, it's good to see someone else here with fine palate for music! Anyway, keep me updated, and hang in there.
