Is there a presently available prescription drug which is an AGE (advanced glycosylation endproduct) inhibitor?

I'm trying to help a diabetic friend. He has a normal HbA1c, eats very healthy with good blood sugar control, and takes lots of supps. Despite this, he has started to develop proteinuria i.e. protein in his urine. This is an early indicator of kidney damage. He already has been on an ACE inibitor (a prescription drug) which helped his proteinuria before. I just started him on benfotiamine. Available pyridoxamine is problematic. The only other readily available AGE inhibitor that he is not already taking that I know of is aminoguanidine. He said that there was an approved prescription drug which is an AGE inhibitor but he did not remember its name.

Ideas anyone?

Any other "research compounds" that might be useful e.g. ALT-711?

Thanks.

Metformin is an AGE inhibitor, related to aminoguanidine. The other superstar AGE inhibitor is Carnosine.

Lynx,

Thanks. Should have mentioned that he is already taking metformin, carnosine, acetyl carnitine and R-ala.

So if he is already taking metformin would adding aminoguanidine add anything? I can't find anything unless aminoguanidine is what he was thinking of.

Scott,

I just found this excellent article on cross-linking

I hope you find it as useful as I did.

Thanks. I'll check when I get home. For some reason I can't get to VRP's website from work.

Scott,
I agree, after reading that one article I decided to check out some of the earlier articles in that series and then some on Mitochondrial Energetics etc. I really haven't found anything new in any of them, but rather a comprehensive synthesis of different pieces that I have read before. I also like their use of graphics. I am glad you liked it too.
