I really like eating olives. I don't know if its the taste or the salt or what, but I have a hard time stopping eating them when I get started. Is there anything I should know about them? I know that something sometimes tastes great when your body needs it, like the salt in the olives, but I don't think I need any more salt. :) Now I just eat them like candy. Is that bad? Is it as bad as candy? Does anyone know?

Olives are great for you. The monounsaturated fat in the oil reduces cardiovascular risk, the polyphenols are excellent anti-oxidants and the list goes on and on and on. I am sure that there is some kind of California Olive Board that has a summary of benefits.

Salt is only a problem for some people, if your kidneys are good and blood pressure is OK, then don't worry.

I found this site which says allot about olives.

http://www.oliveseta...uk/olive-expert

Monounsaturated fats, however, control LDLs whilst at the same time increasing HDL levels. Olive oil contains more monounsaturated fats (77%) than any other naturally produced oil and effectively alters the ratio of HDL : LDL to very positive effect.

It is also widely believed that antioxidants such as vitamins E and K, which are abundant in olive oil, provide a defence mechanism that delays ageing and prevents carcinogenesis, atherosclerosis and liver disorders.

So it seems that the route a long, healthy life is:

- Increase the levels of monounsaturated fat in your diet by replacing other fats (butter, margarine, animal fat, sunflower oils, nut and seed oils) with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
- Reduce the levels of saturated fats in your diet (butter, cheese, red meat).
- Eat more fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals.
- Eat more fish.
- Do 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day.
- Be nice to each other.

Seems I found my favorite food.

haha.  I'm not laughing at you, but rather at the entirety of this peculiar community which I am also a part of.

Hehe, I found myself giggling when I wrote this too. :)

I also have seemingly trivial concerns like this. I find myself becoming more and more concerned with health, especially since reading Fantastic Voyage (I have sworn off even diet soda, one of my guilty pleasures -- its too acidic). Or here's one that people will probably think is somewhat eccentric on my part... I usually hold my breath when I'm walking past a parked car and I have to go through its exhaust fumes.

I have the same phobia of cigaret smoke. I cant stand it when people smoke near by while I wait for the buss. I find myself moving into the wind, or holding my breath and even blowing away the smoke. Silly stuff. :)

Don and Lightowl- Hehe, I have to say a smile came on my face by the affirmative here, nice. :)
When I saw what you Don wrote about holding your breath, I wanted to say exactly what you Lightowl said!
I am holding my breath next to smokers, and when I think about it, yeah also when there's a cars smoke in the air...

About olives- somewhy- I HATE olives, hehe, I can't stand the smell of olives and I hate the taste of olives of any type... (not as much as I hate cigarettes of course, I just feel like there's a deadly toxic in the air when it's smell comes to my nose, disgusting, definitely)!

Oh and Lightowl, it's incorrect for an immortalist to say he's eating something like candies if he's actually eating lot of it- immortalists should eat less candied or sugared stuff... They should use the utterance of "eating it like candies" if they're actually avoiding eating it :) [lol] [g:)]

Hehe, Indeed. A good point. I should have said I eat them even though I'm not hungry. It is sad how cultural language is so intrusive. We take things for granted when we talk much more than we should. Thanks for pointing that out. I will abstain from using that expression again.

I also hated olives when I was younger, but that somehow changed totally. I not saying that your too young to like them (I dont know your age), only that your taste might change. Or maybe I'm just a freak of nature ;). Anyway, I'm sorry you don't like them, they are obviously good for the body. On the other side, I HATE fish and they should be good for me too. [wis]

I am 14...
Freak of nature, heh yeah, everyone has his own loosing screws hehe, (yeah and so do I, I guess... at least that's what they)...
Verily I don't eat those tiny healthy olives which I hate so much, but I do not eat much of unhealthy things and I am exercising, so my health condition is quite good.
About fish- I don't really eat fish often but I do eat it from time to time, but it is VERY depends on what type of fish, for example I can't stand tuna, it totaly disgust me! but as for salmon - I really like, Fishes on the grill are nice, and so sea food although it is not that healthy, at least I think so...

I love sushi. I wish it wasn't so damn expensive.

I cook with either olive or grapeseed oil.

I tend to have a fruit smoothie of some kind most nights (I have a strawberry one in my hands right now). MMmmmm. I do eat lots of nuts for snacks. I'll probably eat fish two days a week. With Polutry or game meat the other days.

Most of my vegtables are sauted as opposed to fresh. As I only grocery shop every 6 months or so (Everything's frozen).

I'm always looking for ways to better my diet, and I love to cook (to get an idea how much I bought a commercial 6 burner gas stove, a little regular home stove will not do! ;)) ).

Lightowl,

Do you eat green or ripe olives? I love ripe olives.

cigarette smoke makes me feel sick. Unfortunatly I have several friends that smoke.

Lightowl,

Do you eat green or ripe olives?

I like to eat both green and ripe, but I tend to eat most ripe because of the extreme saltiness of greens. Ripe olives are also best for your body ( I found ) since they have the most developed oil.

Further, I get those without stones. It really gets frustrating to chew around those stones when you just want to shovel them in ;)

Mmmm... Smoothie are great too, I really should eat some more of those. :)

Ah, cigarettes are the worst...I have this aunt who has been smoking for about 60 years and you can practically see the smoke in her house. Its like a fog! I'm sure every hour I spent there was like smoking a whole pack of cigarettes...its terrible!
