Hi guys,
I'm a Newbie here. So first off hello to you all.
A little bit of background about me.
I was adopted very young and very insecure. wouldn't leave my parents side and slept in their room every night. even on he floor when it was cold.
I was the favourite of my Gran, Uncle Billy and aunty Maggie.
Sadly they all died within 4 years when I was around 6,7 and 8ish.
I didn't want to go to school and wouldn't leave my Man's side.
I became withdrawn.
I was also coming to terms with my sexuality as I realised I was different but wasn't sure why.
This was rather difficult to come to teams with in an ex mining village and steel working town with strong Christian values.
I was diagnosed with big polar disorder after using alcohol, weed, LSD and magic mushrooms as an escape from my situation. which on made it worse. low self esteem, inability to connect with other gay people and no support in this area have led to a complex and unhappy life at times. depression, no motivation and the mood swings of big polar disorder. 2 breakdowns and my belt.
I think personally that all of our problems and issues will dissolve once we make the decission to work toward eleiviate the suffering of others, of all others.

I have a strong belief that the world and all its systems are capable of unifying.
that we are capable of evolving as individuals and as a whole. With love, compassion, empathy and the goal of bringing All things to a place of unity. That this reality can completely evolve to a form of pure limitless energy.
The sufferings of all peoples, all systems and all realities can unite and evolve limitlessly.
Now I use the word evolve but it is just a simple term that I have used with my limited intelligence, as a flavour of what I mean.
I know that exercise is a very important factor in rehabilitation and I have also been looking at
combinations of nootropics and of natural chemicals and extracts etc.
I am very excited at what I have read and heard from various sources.
Can anyone please give me advice or guidance and advice in this or any field.
Many Thanks
David

David,

Sounds to me that your intelligence is greatly above average and that is causing you great distress.

Here are the main levels of intervention you can take
1) Behavioral
2) cognitive
3) environmental
4) social
5) dietary
6) supplemental
7) Medical

if you have any questions on either of them I am more than happy to help. I have used these levels of mechanisms to bring me back from a suicide attempted to a happy and excited person.

Thanks very much for the reply, I'mglad to hear your doing so well after such a severe situation.
I'd love to hear your ways of overcoming/managing your illness.
At the moment I've just touched base with phsyciatric services.
I went out cycling for the first time in ages the other night and am about to get ready and go again.
I have been looking at sleep patterns, regular and frequent meal times and have started a course of zeolites as a detox and base line to begin from. I've been in a semi vegetative state for quite some time now and hope this is the start of the pull out of it!

I am not sure zeolites is a effective use of your time and money. I mean it just doesn't seem impressive at all. I can find little evidence this is effective.
Here are the things I do that both worked for me and are backed by research because I don't believe in faith.
1) Behavioral - meditation, cardio, weight lifting
2) cognitive Cognitive Behavioral therapy! Buy a book from your local bookstore or amazon you can do it yourself.
3) environmental - Make sure you are in a rich environment your brain will be much better off reading Shakespeare than sitting on the couch starring at the floor!
4) social - Make a rule 1 hour a day 1 day a week one week a year where you only focus on your relationships you can text email call or hangout
5) dietary - fruits, vegetables, protein, complex carbs
6) supplemental - fish oil, 5-htp, sam e
7) Medical - seeing a good doctor and taking your meds and being vocal about what you need.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply.....

I,m in the middle of a rough patch and trying to touch base with my phsyciatric team.
I'm currently taking quetiapine fumerate 400mg at night. I feel as if I'm stagnating with extremely low mood, no real positive feel about the future, quite lost and can hardly leave the house, interspersed with relative smooth periods that are short lived.
I have read reports on inositol and cholene this far in terms of anti depressant qualities, also as you suggested same as a supplement along with B vitamins etc. Can you think of anything to help stabilize or improve my situation marginally so I can implement the other systems in the structure you provided?
Thanks

I,m going to hit the movies tonight, go to friends for food and a chat later. I'm going to ring the phsych team tomorrow as I want to remain proactive there.
Has anyone heard anything on a report in the new scientist. July 24 on drug resistant depression being alleviated by pinpoint magnetic field pulses, or even with a cheap headband that usses small electrical pulses increasing gluconate in the brain.
I understand that theoretically this may only work in some cases as a percentage of the depression still may be due to serotonin levels in the brain.
One of the factor for testing if this is the case is said to be a dosage of ketamine, which is illegal for human treatment here in the UK..
Plus it is meant to be administered intravenously, are there any clinical trials of this in the UK that anyone knows of?

Magnetic transcranial therapy is difficult to come by, but a basic tDCS kit (transcranial direct current stimulation), can be ordered online for a very modest sum. Search this forum for tDCS. Generally, medical professionals would of course advise against self-administration based on too little data, but I've tried it myself and have not experienced any negative side effects, and if you check PubMed for tDCS trials you will see that as long as the kit has decent electrodes, does not allow you to go over 2 mA current, and as long as you do not administer long sessions, the only likely side effects would be some light stinging/burning sensation.

I would recommend starting with 2 0.5 mA 10 min sessions each day the first week. Then you can raise to 1.0 mA 15-20 min sessions the next week. Notice how you go.

Remember that less may well be more, too much stimulation can cause a dulling of the desired brain area (primarily the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) instead of increased stimulation. Anyway, google tDCS depression and you will learn what you need to know.

I always recommend mindfulness training, which teaches you to observe feelings, body and thoughts from an objective perspective without getting caught up in the energy sucking spirals typical of depression. Lots of people have been helped. Including myself. Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindful Way through Depression is a great place to start - it contains yoga and meditation exercises that will have a positive result fairly quickly.

The medical advice given to you so far is of good quality, the medical not so.

If the quetiapine isn't working switch, you know that after four weeks at a reasonable dose. Bi-polar 2 means you can normally safely get away with an antidepressant, which you are clearly in need of, along side a mood stabilizer.

Lamotragine is most commonly prescribed for depressive phases often along side and antidepressant.

another option is a swap to aripiprazole.

I'd start with switching the quetiapine to Aripiprazole and then after six weeks adding in an antidepressant - Sertraline, Venlafaxine or Mirtazapine.

"I feel that I am having a sane reaction to an insane world..."

Hang in there. People with similar feelings have altered the course of human history and made this planet a better place.
Men like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, etc- had their own intense struggles with severe depression and a sense of disillusionment with the world around them.
Volunteer to help your community if you can, work with those who need and appreciate your help- do what you can to change things for the better.

A.
