Great website. Has anyone seen my 'to close for comfort' post, its covered by this site.

Theres an experiment done ages ago where there was a sealed flask which was heated to very high temp. It's contents was pure Silica, after it was allowed to cool and upon opening and examining it contained primordial looking single cell organisms. The cells were not contamination, I'm sure its been repeated.

In many ways New Scientist is the National Enquirer of the science world, and this article has the same sensationalistic tone. You could make the similar claims about crystal growth and the amazing patterns created by nonlinear chemical oscillators.

Unless he has an information storage mechanism (like DNA in carbon based life) this isn't all that impressive.  The fact that he can externally assemble a polyoxometalate based system with "life like characteristics" is unremarkable.  A roomba vacuum displays some "like like characteristics" as well.
