Who else here has tried out SAM-e? I just started today, so I have to try this a bit longer of course to make a solid opinion. However, I had only five hours of sleep last night, and this would normally have me completely dysfunctional. After taking my first dose of SAM-e I feel more awake than I do even with proper sleep. That's my main problem I suppose - sleepiness and mental fatigue that keeps me from getting anything done. Here's hoping the SAM-e can change my life, since it has for a lot of people.

So basically: who has tried SAM-e and if you have, how do you like it?
Tips regarding my daytime sleepiness and fatigue appreciated as well - I've already changed my diet and that helped a lot.

EDIT: I'm using Jarrow's SAM-e 200, for those who are concerned.

I've recently started taking the Jarrow's SAM-e 200 (with glucosamine), in an effort to taper off of Wellbutrin. I have to say, I am very surprised. Not only did my mood improve, but I felt mentally sharper, and my back pain almost went away entirely. The latter being somewhat amusing because I only bought the kind with glucosamine because the normal variety was out of stock, but I do believe that SAM-e has joint benefits by itself.

The most surprising is the mood component. I've tried tapering off of Wellbutrin before with horrendous results. Now it seems doable. I'm only at half dosage of Wellbutrin right now, but I'm thinking in about a week, I'll be able to go off entirely.

Also, the mental sharpness gain I noticed could be related to the piracetam I'm taking. Somehow the SAM-e could be making the piracetam more effective or otherwise lifting the fog a little. Truly great stuff.

SAM-e 400 has been part of my stack from the beginning, so any benefits I may be receiving are hard to associate with just the SAM-e. I surmise that the donated -methyl group actually helps other supplements like l-tyro and 5-htp to cross the BBB more efficiently... these supplements when taken without the SAM-e seem to have a diminished effect for me. I will keep taking it solely for its purported effects on longevity, mainly the methylation of DNA; don't we all want to live longer, after all?

Also pertinent to note: I agree with Geostriata's statement that SAM-e seems to potentiate Piracetam, or at least seems to have a noticeable synergy with it.

I have tried out SAM-e, while I was taking many other medications and supplements at the same time I do believe it did help at the dosage of 800-1600mg/day. My only problem was one time I got minor stomach upset when I didn't eat and took it.

I noticed your only taking 200mg/day. The doses of SAM-e used in the scientific studies range from 400-1600mg (WEBMD)

Adult
Recommended doses of SAMe vary depending on the health condition being treated. The following list gives information on the dosages used in studies for each condition:
Depression: 800 - 1,600 mg of SAMe per day, in 2 divided doses (morning and afternoon)
Source: S-adenosylmethionine | University of Maryland Medical Center http://umm.edu/healt...e#ixzz2c4LlmVBi
University of Maryland Medical Center

SAM-e at 800-1600mg/day tends to take 6-8 weeks to begin working (university of Maryland)

"http://chronicfatigu...on/p/SAM-e.htm" claims it has "stimulating" properties in some people. Although, this isn't a grade a source :)

Probably the number one thing you can do for you sleep is to have a normalized sleep schedule where you go to bed and wakeup at the same time every day (My intro to psych class online via University of Toronto)

Regular exercise can increase energy levels and fight fatigue (WebMD)

"http://www.foxnews.c...529593,00.html" claims meditation increases energy although I would find a better source before you allocate a major portion of your day since I am sure they exsist I am just pressed for time.

Ginko may have some benefit in the 240-600mg range on some paramiters of cognitive and a weak antidepressant effect. While, not a replacement for standard medical care.

here are the links for cognition and subjective well being supplements and how much evidence exsists for them

Panax ginseng, rhodiola rosea, ginko, and phosphidadtyl serine I take.

For what it's worth, I've been taking 200mg twice a day.

Interesting links, mrd1. Most of the studies used injections of SAMe instead of pills. I wonder if how that impacts the efficacy...

I definitely noticed a slight antidepressant effect from taking SAM-e at 200mg. But what's more noticeable is its effect on my need for sleep. I don't remember feeling very sleepy at all since starting it, even last night (I feel asleep fine, just didn't feel very tired). This is a remarkable improvement, because I normally have bad daytime sleepiness, especially when consuming dairy. At the same time, I do have less brain fog although the effects today aren't as strong as yesterday when I started. Another thing - I think I definitely experienced the side effect of lower blood sugar. Normally in the morning I have enough energy to skip breakfast, and now I NEED to eat something when I wake up (after letting the SAMe get into my system).

Yesterday I had such intense, great focus and it's not quite as strong today. I took it with a multivitamin yesterday, so maybe that's why.

For long time users: have you had to increase your dosage of SAM-e over time or can you consistently reproduce the effects with what you had at the beginning?

ALSO: Jarrow's SAM-e 200 provides 200mg of pure SAM-e from 400mg SAM-e tosylate disulfate. Other brands that say they provide 200mg may actually mean the salt form. I've always trusted Jarrow, although I'm open to other brands if people know anything better.

Some research, including multiple clinical trials, has indicated taking SAM on a regular basis may help fight depression,[8][9][10] liver disease, and the pain of osteoarthritis.[11]

While someone will always report tolerance to anything somewhere, it appears the SAM e works best in the long term treatment.

one may benefit from the addition of folate and b12 to SAM-e (University of maryland) Although, I am unsure of why my guess is the ability of SAM e to hide deficiency and the the methylation role with the b vitamins in homocystine and cofactors for "mood" chemicals

another option would be a magnesium supplement

if female possibly creatine

5-htp and or a SSRI with your doc approval

Forgot to mention, make sure you get enteric-coated SAM-e. This way the SAM-e stays in pill form until it can be released at the appropriate time in the GI tract, so you don't lose any to FPM or digestive processes prior to the small intestine. I have the Jarrow boxed formulation as well, albeit I take the 400mg dose 2x daily. For those curious, some facts about SAM-e:

What is it?

- SAM-e (S-Adenosylmethionine) is an amino acid derivative that has been clinically proven to benefit brain and joint function. Found in all living cells, SAM-e is also called "activated methionine" since it is formed by reacting ATP and methionine (an essential amino acid). Supplementation with methionine alone does not result in SAM-e elevation, and, in fact, can cause elevation of toxic homocysteine.

Biological impact?

- SAM-e has undergone dozens of clinical trials involving thousands of patients. Researchers studying the beneficial effects of SAM-e have identified the following structure and function benefits of SAM-e:

Joint Strength

- SAM-e supports the production of healthy connective tissue through a process known as transulfuration. In this process, critical components of connective tissue, including glucosamine and the chondroitin sulfates, are sulfated by SAM-e metabolites. SAM-e also increases the production of methyl-thio-adenosine, which may partially account for the joint benefits of SAM-e. The metabolism of SAM-e also results in the production of L-cysteine, an important amino acid in the body used to construct a family of sulfur-containing compounds of critical importance, including glutathione. Some of these compounds are the building blocks needed for the synthesis of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and the bone matrix.

Liver Function

- SAM-e metabolism supports the synthesis of glutathione (GSH) and glutathione-dependent enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase), which are substances important for liver function. Glutathione in necessary for the scavenging of free radicals produced by glycolysis, the breakdown of carbohydrates for energy. The amino acid taurine is another metabolite of SAM-e metabolism. The glutathione family of compounds and taurine are important for liver detoxification reactions.

Brain Function

- SAM-e supports brain functions by its methylation effects. Methylation is the process by which a four atom appendage (unit of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms) is transferred from one molecule to another. Of all methyl-donating substances known in mammalian metabolism, SAM-e is the most important. The donation of methyl groups affects the proper function of many metabolic processes, including brain function, energy production and DNA metabolism. Neurotransmitters, compounds involved in the brain's cell-to-cell communication, are the products of methylation reactions. These compounds include L-DOPA, dopamine and related hormones, epinephrine, and phosphatidylcholine (a component of lecithin).

Energy Production

- Methylation from SAM-e is critical for proper energy production, because it is needed for the production of creatine. Creatine maximizes physical performance, reduces exercise fatigue and improves recovery after exercise.

Longevity

- Methylation of DNA appears to be important in the prevention of DNA imperfections. The demethylation of DNA is considered a contributor to the aging process. Proper methylation through substances such as SAM-e positively influence longevity.

Thank you! I have been enjoying yours too for awhile, even though we may not totally agree on a couple of things :-D . Regardless, you are very well-informed. I wish more people your age showed as genuine an interest in how their brains work!

I've taken sam-e for some weeks now but when i take 200mg in the morning consecutively for some days i get vivid nightmares consecutively. Almost no day passes with belong to the most frightness. Nightmares about the past and real life experiences. After i stop taking for 2 days they go away. I really like sam-e because it gives me energy, uplifting but the nightmares bother me to much to continue. I am really wondering if anybody knows if i always had these nightmares but same-e makes them easier to remember. That could explain why people have fobias
