Geron (GERN)

Anticancer drug candidate GRN163L, which inhibits telomerase, an enzyme that may prolong cellular life and prevents apoptosis (programmed cell death).
The firm is also continuing its work with human embryonic stem cells.

"What makes this an important observation is that this is the first time this particular drug has been shown to prevent metastasis into the lungs," Shay said. "So, it might prevent lung cancer cells from leaving the lung, and it might be able to prevent metastasis in other tumors."

The clinical trial will be conducted by Geron, the California-based biotechnology company that developed GRN163L. Geron received approval for the trial from the U.S.    Food and Drug Administration in June. It will be conducted at two medical centers in New York, which are recruiting patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The primary purpose of the trial is to test the safety of the drug. If it is successful, it will be followed by a series of human trials to determine the effectiveness of the medication.

If all goes well, Shay said, GRN163L will ultimately be used as part of a combined treatment program. "Where this would pay off is for people who have a relapse after chemotherapy, after surgery," he said. "It would be used in combination with other therapies."

This decision came as Geron (NASDAQ:GERN) was gearing up for the world's first attempt to carefully test the cells in people, which has been the focus of a lot of apprehension due to safety worries.

Its interesting how this all links together, Michael West founded Geron. He even called up Leonard Hayflick (then in retirement) back in the day, and Leonard shipped a truck load of his old equipment to them. After they created the immortal cells, of course the next big thing, the big test, the big pay off was going to be to see if they could get it to work in humans. It looks like this is a judge blocking everything we are about. If all of the indefinite life extension communities work were to culminate in points that pay off for the main goal then it looks like this could be one of them.

These tests will be in people newly paralyzed (injury to spinal cord within past 7-14 days). It is primarily looking at safety; i.e. it's a phase I trial. It is also hoped that people given this stem cell treatment will regain some muscle control. This is a pretty big deal; ten years in the making.

Does anybody invest here? Geron is like the other SENS. They birthed the prospects of the Immortal Cell. Lets say a stock usually holds strong but hits some rough spots and sometimes trends down, wouldnt an addition of many more investors help to stabilize it?
