Shakib Otman — son of a Morrocan sheikh, and a former medical student, expelled for poor grades or systematic skipping of classes (reports diverge) — alleged to have luridly beaten the honorable Doctor (and Lecturer -- there might be a connection) Leon Freifeld of Lviv to death, was acquitted last week by the first jury trial to have taken place in Ukraine. The judges differ with the jury and consider the defendant guilty. I have contacted a relative of Freifeld's; it appears that his traumatized family is certain that Otman is guilty and suspects that the jury, which consisted of three undistinguished citizens (plus two auxiliary jurors), was bribed by the defandant's ill-reputed lawyer, who was seen in their company. The case is to be addressed by an appellate court, but Freifeld's family is afraid that Otman will flee to Morocco before the hearing.
The good doctor's life was taken shortly before his scheduled trip to Beersheba, Israel to meet with his brother Vadim Freifeld, a biogerontologist and aspiring life extensionist in charge of a laboratory on the problems of aging at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
