In recent years, many businesses have used 'Search Engine Optimisation' (SEO) companies to boost their rankings on google. One strategy involves posting links to the company on other sites and user-contributed content sites like LongeCity provide a great opportunity for this. For our users, posts with links that have been shared mainly for SEO purposes are usually not useful. This is why there is a limit to the links new users can post immediately after signing up, but determined 'link spammers' get around this restriction. If these get reported by users we often delete them if it is not clear that the link is 'spam' or if a viable discussion incorporates the link.

Recently google has changed its policies or feedback mechanisms and now many of these links are coming back to haunt the companies who commissioned them in the first place. Since that change, we get emails every week asking us to take down links. Some of these messages are polite and admit they should not have embarked on this tactic in the first place, some others think that threats about 'blacklisting' or 'copyright infringement' will do the trick.

Whatever the tone of the message, it puts us into a slightly difficult position: Normally, LongeCity does not delete content just because someone requests it. On the other hand, the posts that are brought to our attention that way can be considered spam and often there is no merit in keeping them. The moderators will make a decision on a case-by-case basis.

If you want LongeCity to delete a link please
1- be aware that LongeCity automatically adds the rel="nofollow" attribute to any links posted on the forums. We do not endorse links posted and to not participate in link-sharing schemes.
2- supply an explanation how the link was commissioned and why it should be removed. We may need to understand your legitimate interests in the matter.
3- do not engage in baseless legal threats. LongeCity will 'name and shame' companies and individuals trying this tactic or be forced into seeking declaratory judgement under Title.6 Chap.6 Art.5 Code of Alabama
4- do not send us repeated requests or reminders and do not ask us to get back or require any formal replies - LongeCity has limited volunteer capacity and we will only be able to attend to the matter as time allows.
