Slowly finding out more about the different types of probiotics out there. I was under the impression that they were all alike and only differed in potency. Apparently I was wrong:) I'm also very curious as to what therapeutic effects people are experiencing.  For myself, based on initial research, I feel I would benefit most from probiotics containing Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium infantis so that helps me narrow my search.

Which pro-biotics, brands, do you take and why?

My primary goal is to reduce gram negative bacteria and lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG (brand name Culturelle) combined with an FOS (fructooligosaccharide) prebiotic has worked well for me.

Lactobacillus excrete lactic acid which gram negative bacteria apparently hate.  The FOS prebiotic is dirt cheap and feeds bifidobacterium causing their population to explode on its own without adding a bifido probiotic.

Choosing a culture that will survive stomach acid is important.  It doesn't help if your probiotic has 100 Billion active cell/cultures if none of them survive stomach acid to reach the colon and lactobacillus rhamnosus has a good track record of surviving stomach acid.

The FOS prebiotic gave me some gas when I first started taking it, but remarkably, it didn't stink!  After a couple weeks on this the gas issue "passed" & I now get no side effects from either of these.

I've been on this combination therapy for several years now and have been very pleased with the results.  My GI function hasn't been this good in years.  I'm now very regular, farts don't stink and my overall health has greatly improved.  Most notably, I had developed some dark puffy bags under my eyes that vanished shortly after starting this regime.  I can also eat spicy food without getting explosive bowel issues the next morning.  It's like my gut is now bullet proof.

My girlfriend had developed some irritable bowel issues and although she doesn't believe in supplements, I got her to try some of my FOS and Culturelle.  She had gone on and off it several times and finally admitted, "WOW that stuff really works".

Potato starch also seems to help when taking probiotics. FOS really gases you up, I didn't have the patience to wait for that effect to go away (gas for weeks on end?)
I take l-reuteri which has some studies regarding inflammation and one from Now (gra8dophilus or something, enteric coated). Seem to help a little with bowel issues and digestion but I still cannot eat very spicy food.
Trying to substitute with kefir milk which is said to contain loads of usable probiotics...

Mentions 'regular' l-reuteri, and that's the reason I started taking it too

Thanks for all the replies! Certainly a huge area in itself to do research. Based on my needs and my limited research have decided to go with 2 brands

Align which contains both Bifidobacterium longum and  subsp. infantis

and

Nature's Way, Primadophilus Reuteri,
http://www.iherb.com...c-90-Vcaps/4674

I also need to do more research on the following which was highly recommended by Alberto Villoldo in a BulletProof podcast. Not sure about the pros and cons of 'soil based' probiotics.

I'm currently taking a vegan probiotic called Dr. Fuhrman's Flora Biotect that is enteric coated. I have noticed an improvement in my mood and regularity but my second dose of the day gives me some bloating / gas. Otherwise I like it.

I would love to find a product containing the Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA-6475 that does not contain Isomalt or xylitol. Any ideas? I have only found one product containing the L. reuteri 6475. That product is Biogaia Gastrus and it contains at least one sugar substitute that may or may not be friendly to the gut microbiota. It is available on Amazon now. Has anyone used this product? I have it on order. Thank you.

dr fuhrman's seems to overchage on a lot of simple everyday used products.

also i wanted to mention people should restrict a lot of antibacterial supplements (which are a lot) and drinks like green tea or coffee when taking probiotics because those will kill them and lots of money and effort wasted.

What evidence is there that green tea and coffee are antibacterial?  Does this apply only to probiotics taken with these drinks, or existing microbiota too?

From a longevity perspective, I believe you want to optimize calorie burning , this probiotic from Renew Life will help with that.

I find probiotics shockingly powerful and don’t take one. Granted, I did spend up and buy all the fancy ones to try them out. And boy do they work...PS128 for example was VERY serotonergic, whereas the BioGaia one was quite anti serotonergic, as advertised...this is some powerful stuff, indeed.

As others have remarked and studies shown-some of these are as potent as say, Prozac (which is a ridiculously powerful drug, obviously).

So I wouldn’t blindly take one, focus on good diet, and maybe experiment to see what suits you. I generally find they make me feel weird.
