Perika is the most effective I've found.  Second best is any standardized extract.

One more thing to try is DHEA.  I'm 38 and I thought at first it was just for older people.  But 25mg of DHEA combined with standardized SJW has been a miracle for my depression.  SJW helps, but DHEA just virtually eliminated my depression.

Eclectic Institute SJW is standardized to both hyperforin and hypericin just like Kira. I'm finding it very effective. Perika is also high quality but is hyperforin-only extract. Some may prefer that though. Hyperforin is the one with SNDRI-effect so it's more activating, whereas hypericin is better form calm and contententment.

thanks guys, it's a hassle to find a quality st johns wort, mine doesn't seem to work very well but for 3 dollars for 200 capsules you can't expect much i think..

i will try both with hyperforine only and with hypericin+ hyperforin

Have you tried DHEA?  It has been a godsend for me.  I'm a little nervous about taking hormones since i'm only 38.  However the results from 25mg twice a day have been dramatic.  I'd rather live with any potential adverse effects than live with depression.

Don't give up!  Another supplement to try is Saffron Extract that has some exciting research behind it. It didn't work as well as SJW for *me*, but everyone is different.

Thx health_nutty
I never tried dhea, i will try it but in all honesty i dont think it gonna make a difference
im convinced that my problems Come from serotonin and gaba
My story is a bit complicated but to make it short
I can't take 99% of antidepressants cause their worsen my tinnitus and hearing loss( thx to tramadol who permanently sensetized me to ototoxic effects of medications)
the only antidepressant i can take now is agomelatine but it doesnt work on serotonin so i got no results
This is why i tried st John's wort, im not trying to only fix depression but anxiety too, wake up anxiety with hyperhidrosis and uncontrolable and rapid thoughts
( it had Been 3 years i didnt have a normal wake up) i take benzo every morning to stop these
symptoms
I have cognitives impairment and add too and a host of other things i will not even list
St John's wort was working very good on waking anxiety and cognitive issues i even stopped taking benzo in the morning
I really thought i finally found something
Now im ordering saffron but not for depression but to recover vision loss from st John's wort lol..
I really want to try another brand 100% free of hypericin but didnt find one
I will give 5 htp l-tryptophan and tyrosine and inositol a shot and if they dont work then fuck
It will be benzo until i become truly retarded and senile

Was thinking of adding SJW, but opted for SAM-e a few times a week because of supposed safety issues. There seems to be 2 camps when it comes to SJW, pro(safe and effective) and con ( ineffective and or possibly phototoxic over long term use).

Is there anything to these anecdotal reports of photosensitivity and eye damage?

Cylon i didnt Know about st John's wort phototoxicity because i don't have alot of knownledge when it come to herbal "remedies"
So i just tried it because i didnt have other options and by curiosity, i havent even read the possible side effects and knew only that it interact with alot of médications because it's a CYP3A4 inducer
But after a week or so i started to notice that my vision became blurred, i didnt make the connection because from time to time i have this symptom because of lasik surgery ( to correct astigmatism) and doesnt last more than a day but my vision became increasingly blurrier and my eyes started to burn which was unusual
I started to do some reaserch about st John's wort and discovered that hypericin react strongly to light and not only uv light but visible light too (computers, artificial and natural light etc) and when the compound goes to the eyes then it react with light and become an pro oxidant killing retinal cells and damaging the eyes lenses leading to loss of visual acuity, cataract and possible macular degeneration
These effects are not immediate and can manifest themselves years after often these diseases are symptomless until the eyes become very damaged
I have read several reports of people on a sjw board that it highly damaged their vision, sometimes leading to loss of more than 50% of their acuity ..
I still don't why some are symptomless (for the time being ) and why others manifest such symptoms so rapidly, it can be the quality of the product ( some have high amount of hypericin while the prescription one in germany need to have less than 0,3 mg/pills)
Maybe there is the genetic make up, people with white/ pale skin and light eyes color like me have more chance to develop these problems and maybe sjw just trigger them
There is the amount of exposition to Bright light too while on it (and no, sunglass won't protect you againt sun damage because they only block uv light)
Right now i have a hard time looking at a screen and im typing on a phone with the minimum brightness possible and it has Been 3 days i stopped
If you more information just google hypericin cataract/ macular degeneration/ blurred vision

Hypericin is in trial to kill cancerous cell with the help of.. Light because of it pro oxidant effects
There are studies and reports about sjw effects on eyes cant give the links Right now, i have a hard time looking at screens
My advice and just to be on the cautious side don't take it and try alternatives like inositol samE and the combo l tryptophan/5 htp and l tyrosine
Or try ( i Know im gonna be flammed for this ) low side effects pharmaceuticals like agomelatine tianeptine moclobemide low dose amisulpiride..
I tell you this because alot of things can be "repaired" or fixed in the human body but when it Come to our eyes ( the most important sense in human) nothing can be done once damaged and there will be no cure even in the near future
So be smart and don't play with your eyes health!
I rather have no libido cause of a ssri than damage my vision unfortunately im limited in my options!
And lastly dont buy cheap products and stick to recognized brands even if expensive! Cant stress this enough
I learned that recently uk and us governement removed alot of natural supplements off the shelves because what they contained didnt match with what was labelled and that include even recognized brand like Perika sjw
