Have any of you tried this probiotic, or heard much about it?  It seems like an interesting approach to delivering probiotics.  Basically, they are sold in boxes that are a 6-day supply at a very high dose (500 billion CFU/day;  3 trillion CFU/ 6-day program).  The capsules appear to be what amounts to enteric-coating on steroids.  They're thick, multi-layered capsules that supposedly dissolve close to or inside of the colon.  The formulation/selection of probiotic strains seems decent to me.  The company has only been around for a short time, and there are very few reviews online.  http://www.elixa-probiotic.com/

Anyone?

I have some concerns about people with digestive issues using a product with highly enteric coated capsules.
The term bowel obstruction comes to mind....

I went ahead and ordered some, and they arrived today.  I got two 6-day packages, and I will take them back to back for 12 consecutive days.  I've read on some other forums that some people have seen an improvement in their skin health from these probiotics. I have acne, dry skin, and some dandruff / seborrheic dermatitis (on my forehead and around hairline).  It'll be interesting to see if any of these improve.  I'll also report any other (side) effects I experience, whether they be good or bad.

Strelok,

Thanks for the information. Do you have a picture of the back label? Does it indicate the specific strains of each bacterium? From a chart on their website, I estimated that the doseage is from about 12 Billion CFU per day for the lowest up to 80 Billion CFU for the highest concentration of each strain. (This assumes that their chart is proportional, as there is not a scale.)

Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Lactobacillus Plantarum
Lactobacillus Reuteri
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
Lactobacillus Casei
Lactobacillus Salivarius (NEW)
Lactobacillus Helveticus (NEW)

Bifidobacterium Bifidum
Bifidobacterium Lactis
Bifidobacterium Longum
Bifidobacterium Infantis (NEW)
Bifidobacterium Breve

Heisoktoday,

I looked on the back of the box, and it does not list the specific strains, just the genus+species like you have listed above, and the total amount (500b CFU).

Hi,

I went ahead and ordered a 24 dose supply for my wife. She has just completed the first 12 days.  Her diet is pretty poor. Too much sugar, processed foods, and a lack of fruits and vegetables. For years she has suffered from severe constipation. In order to have maybe 1 or 2 bowel movements a week, if lucky, she has relied on laxatives, suppositories, enemas and cellulose fiber.  A year or so ago, we tried the VSL product in the little packets which mix into water, and the results were not noticeable at the time. (This is not to judge the product, just to explain the difficulty. I have not read bad things about VSL. Seems to work for many.)

Sorry that this is too much information, but I will mention 1 apparant GREAT result. This morning she mentioned that she has started having unassisted bowel movements. Several over the last week. She has not noticed any skin benefits as of yet. We have not decided yet what dosing schedule we will use for the Elixa from here on out. I need to add some prebiotics, and whole food fiber sources into her diet. Hopefully that will keep her operating well. As an aside, due to my yogurt eating, I made a 6 litre batch with 1 of the Elixa capsules, and it made a fine tasting yogurt. I will stick to other cultures for my yogurt though.

That is great news that it helped your wife!

I ordered two 12-day supplies; one for myself and one for my dad.  We both took our daily dose for twelve days straight, first thing in the morning, per instruction.  Neither of us noticed any appreciable difference (in bowel movements, skin health, or anything else that might be noticeable).  So, unfortunately it was basically a waste of time for us, but I think these probiotics are capable of helping at least some people.  Maybe we both needed our own 24-day supply, but I doubt it.

Thank you very much. Seems to be the theory that probiotics effect individuals differently.

Having said that, I would not think a greater than 12 day course would be justified in your case. Maybe if you felt and observed some improvement. Your results have made me wait and see, before I recommend the probiotic to others. We have a second 12 day course for use, and if that seems to have a similar benefit, I will let others know while explaining that others mileage has varied.  :)
