So, I'll try to make this quick:

•My Fasting Blood Glucose is consistently 110-125 (for more than a year, 30 random checks).

•My Post Prandial Blood Glucose is typically 140-160, depending on what I eat and the time after consumption.

These numbers imply pre-diabetes.

•My HbA1c is low, at 5.2 – comfortably within the "low" range (being below 6 is considered "normal", 6-6.4 is pre-diabetic).

•I'm in terrific physical shape, eat a clean low to moderate carb diet (carbs come from yams, fruits, 80%+ dark chocolate, occasional oatmeal).

Why are my numbers out of whack?! Note that I also tend to drink more water than most, sleep longer (9+ hours) and feel somewhat fatigued / tired in the afternoon, despite fantastic sleep. This naturally concerns me, but my HbA1c tells a different story...

Had the same experience 4 years ago. Ramping up Mg intake helped.

How much magnesium and how much did it help (pre numbers and post numbers would help)?

I'm taking about 300mg /day; perhaps I need more?

Difficult to tell if it would work for you too. Before I took in average 0.8 g/d already for years to avoid pain-full muscle cramps. Then I added the mineral water Rogatska Donat Mg, which contains 1g of Mg per liter for a total of 1.8mg of magnesium per day. Just at that time I was taking my occasional month of blood glucose measurements (1 fasted, 2 postprandial each day) and saw a significant improvement within days.
