Hey thomas. Good to have you here. You should create a topic in the 'introduce youself forum' http://www.imminst.o...?s=&act=SF&f=75 and introduce yourself!

I'm from Christchurch though I wouldn't call myself an 'immortalist' as I'm not yet up on the idea/philosophy of the whole thing.

I am interested in the Singularity concept... as well as cognitive biases, rational thinking etc. etc.

Hey good to meet to meet you illuzion. Yeah the singularity is a interesting concept with some very intelligent material. And those are powerful ideas, and very cool!
I'm actually in Christchurch too, I'm living now at the Uni of cant.

I guess the whole immortality concept, is that its actually a really obvious concept if you are free enough to actually think it through yourself.
And as a result we have a forum with smart freethinkers who have came here through that gateway meme.
And also people need to get updated ideas on death, because some of the archaic death memes are causing a lot of harm, in lack of research, and accepting some forms of death etc.

A letter writing campaign to polititians? How would that work?

I think we should allow drugs to be developed for enhancement (I tried writing that to the green party but got nothing), this will allow drugs to be explicitly devolped for enhancement not implicitly (eg ritalin) maybe well get safer less addictive versions of current black market drugs, streamlining the regulatory process, and subsidising drug development.
Euthanasia in a way that preserves the brain (suitable for cryonics)(although this will make cryonics freakier, even if this is advokated!)
Science funding and positive regulation
Research direction (science is already politicised...)
Rights to enhancement, and rights for posthuman sentinence (animal rights is a precedent for this).
Space regulations and investment (not an issue in NZ)
Long-term environmental issues

And some more here http://thpromo.pbwik...cs and Lobbying

Also death cerificates can be got easily, but autopsy law states:
If the coroner orders a post mortem to be carried out, then he/she will advise the deceased person’s immediate family that this is being done, telling them the reasons why the post mortem was ordered.
So you don't have any choice, and it can be done without former consent.
