I wonder if you caught the same virus that I did in this infectious episode? The virus I caught (which was likely a nasty strain of coxsackievirus B) permanently induced both anhedonia and blunted emotions in me. See my website about this virus here: https://chronicsorethroat.wordpress.com  

 

Also, I later then developed chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) from the virus, and this in turn led to a loss of my spiritual sense, and my conscious sensibilities. I think what you are describing as "an atmosphere-feeling" is the way the brain can produce a gestalt of our sensory experiences, to create an overview or "distillation" of our experiences and circumstances that results in an overall tone, feeling or "vibe". 

 

I lost that ability to create an "atmosphere-feeling" in my mind after I developed ME/CFS. I am still aware of the circumstances around me, and still aware of my sensory experiences; but those experiences do not get turned into an holistic "atmosphere-feeling". I just perceive the sensory experiences as cold dry fact, but they are not embellished with this gestalt "atmosphere-feeling".

I recall childhood being pretty shitty and I had pretty decent parents and upbringing, the error here is in making happiness one's compass. The more obsessed with happiness the less happy you'll be. Here I’ll explain why not giving a damn about happiness makes you happier, quantitatively, and qualitatively...

everyone gets slight nostalgia when we remember stuff, the nostalgia from childhood is stronger because we were happier then and had no mental problems which when we see things from our childhood that we grew up with and that gives us the same good feelings we had which then gets compared to now, causing a nostalgia feeling.

Likely the OP is no longer listening, nevertheless, I'm guessing a lot of people need something these times...

 

Things that improve a state of mind IME, regardless of the state of the world (always phuked in my experience - get used to it)

 

  • Focus, whatever you do, focus - absolutely. Eliminate all distractions in your mind, and focus on what you are doing, for as long as you can - be it, thought, exercise, study, etc. You can climb mountains of joy in you mind.
  • Some microdosed temporary chemical mind adjustment (caffeine, CBD, THC, Ethanol, etc.). Then do/think whatever changes your perspective a bit and gets you out of the your current funk, even if only for a time. So you can focus more.
  • Rinse, repeat.

I am not sure that everyone's childhood was as great as they remember. Memory is emotional. If you had horrific things happen to you as a child, that is what you will remember the most. If you had a decent childhood in a decent family, then you will probably remember more of the high points than the low points.

 

I get nostalgic for my childhood sometimes, mainly because it was more carefree, having none of the stress of being an adult and being a provider.

 

Being more free could be associated with being happier, however I don't think it is clear cut. If I think deeply about my childhood, I wasn't happy "all the time", maybe only half the time, as should be expected. You would not know what being happy meant, if you were not sad sometimes.

 

Maybe I was happier when I was a child, but I most fondly recall the times in life when I overcame obstacles as a young adult, from 18 up to 35 or so.

Everyone was in more tune with nature back in the day and you feed of their energy or the young age kept you happy as children are more in tune with natural ways. And  happiness give us energy.
