I got into habit of taking ~1g of ALCAR daily. should I stop it?

Already been discussed thoroughly. The link is non-existent. High dose carnitine + other lipoprotein(a) inhibitors can reverse atherosclerosis.

Bottom line...  If Carnitine (at least from red meat) is bad (due to TMAO generation), most all seafood, which generates much higher levels of TMAO would be disastrous.  

 

The Mediterranean Diet would be one of the worst in the world for health & longevity, and the Japanese should have some of the shortest lifespans on the planet, due to their high seafood, high TMAO diets.
